Why Diets Are A Waste Of Time & Money - What You Can Do Instead

May 1st, 2008 by emyleperez

By Paul Wilson A ‘diet’ is always seen as a temporary measure. An unpleasant episode that must be endured in order to reach some weight target, often in time for a major event such as a wedding, your own or your children’s. Afterwards, with a big sigh of relief that its over, we get back to normal eating. In what seems no time at all, especially if a holiday is involved, the weight is back where it was, and you wonder; was it worth it? The truth about diets is that they train us to “live on less” so normal food is now far too much. Many people have managed to get to their chosen weight and then find that they cannot come off the diet without putting the weight back on. They are trapped in a regime of half starvation and misery. Their life revolves around how much can they eat and when they eventually break, which they always do, they eat like it was an Olympic event. The answer is simple - just eat slightly less for all of the time. It may be slower than you would like but it works, and its forever not just for Christmas or weddings. If you reduce the fat content of your ‘normal’ food you can eat an enormous amount of other stuff, so you won’t feel hungry. You will actually eat less calories without eating less food. Avoiding fat is easy. Obvious targets are dairy fats and margarines. Spread butter or margarine thinly, or buy fat-reduced spreads, or even better, try without. It works for sandwiches with lettuce and tomato to provide some moisture but I’d rather have some spread on my toast than just jam. Trim the fat off your meat and bacon before cooking. Try semi-skimmed milk and then progress to the fully skimmed. Ignore the slightly grey colour and enjoy its increased calcium and vitamins compared to the greasy un- skimmed product. Vegetarians should also be aware that many vegetable-based products could be as heavy in fat as those that are meat based. Biscuits are generally very high in fat, typically around 25% but much higher again if chocolate coated. The problem with biscuits is that you can easily take in a substantial part of your daily calories without feeling as though you have eaten anything but a few mouthfuls. If you need a snack have some fruit instead or low fat yoghurt. Attention! Is Your Relationship A 10?

April 28th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Jan Tincher Do you and your partner have the same arguments over and over? Do you wish they’d just pay attention at least once in a while? Why do you have to keep getting yelled at or keep yelling at them over the same things again and again? Why can’t they just understand you? Well, you know what? They might be thinking the same thing about you. Why don’t you take steps to change that? Here’s how: Set aside a time to really talk with your partner, your spouse, your significant other, your children, your parents, whoever is close to you. Ask the questions below that are appropriate: *On a scale of 1 to 10, how is our relationship?* How is our business relationship? How is our sexual relationship? How is our parent/child relationship? How is our working relationship? Are the answers under 10? Then ask this question: *What would it take to make it a 10?* Keep the discussion flowing. Listen and participate. Don’t be satisfied with an 8 or under. If you settle for less than a 9, be prepared for some jolts along the way. Ask weekly. Have fun with it. Get to know your partner, your spouse, your significant other, your children, your parents, or anyone who is close to you, all over again. If you’re in a relationship, why not make the most of it? Life is meant to be learned about, lived, loved. If you like this technique, pass it on to a friend. Watch as their life changes for the better. Thanks for reading. Emotional Healing

April 26th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD An innovative and highly effective process to achieve complete and more total healing is direct, focused, and combines healing the past while creating the future. You will make a subtle and effective transition to self-discovery and empowerment. Traditional psychotherapy/psychoanalysis fails to address the all-important relationship to one’s true spiritual nature–relying solely on developing better coping strategies.Traditional spiritual practice often bypasses -and thus fails to transform - the psychological conditional patterns and unconscious beliefs that arise from our personal histories and adaptations. Both, in general, neglect the fact that we feel, sense, and experience global political mass consciousness, as well as our individual consciousness, like never before. A Mind, Body, Spirit approach addresses all three, therefore opening the door to true balance and emotional healing. Well-being comes from the understanding of the Self, the family, the local community in which we live, and the global community of which we are a part. We are each one heart of the Whole; each heart here to express its unique piece of the Whole. Knowing Self creates a sense of “I as a piece of this Whole,” different and one at the same timeknowing how to have fun, and knowing how to consciously create success. Good health is the aliveness you createaliveness with love, trust, expectancy and enthusiasmwith which you live your life and explore your reality. Dorothy M. Trying to Define Criminal Law

April 24th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Ryan Fyfe We hear about law everyday whether we realize it or not. It’s in our Government, in our work, and even in our houses. One type of law is Criminal law, which is also known as Penal law. This is “The body of statutory and common law that deals with crime and the legal punishment of criminal offenses.” Inside of criminal law there is four major theories of criminal justice: - Punishment - Deterrence - Incapacitation - Rehabilitation This form of law is essential in many cases because it can distinguis between crimes from civil wrongs. Criminal law has been around for ages, and is seeing as the fundamental system of regulating the behavior of individuals and groups relatively to what is defined as the social norms. This differs between civil crimes, where the difference is between two individuals and their individual rights and obligations under the law which is ruling the entire society. An example of a civil law case is a dispute between two individuals over a contract that they made to for example sell an automobile. In that case one individual feels that their individual rights for a fair automobile sale have been breached by the other party. Where as in a criminal case, you would have for example a murderer, who is infringing on the right of safety that we all have. Given those two examples I’m sure you can appreciate how important Criminal law is, and the important role that it plays in everyone of our societies. In-Between Hair: Out-Growing A Bad Haircut

April 22nd, 2008 by emyleperez

By Ron King In-between hair — when you are waiting for that bad haircut to grow out — is a frustrating hair problem. Fortunately there are ways to get through this difficult time with a minimum of stress. Acceptance The first thing to do is to accept your hair as it is. Admit that there is only so much you can do at this stage. Once you accept your fate, then you can begin to focus on finding styles that are possible. Look at fashion magazines for models with hair similar to yours. Then take an evening and experiment with these different styles. You may be surprised at the results. Accessorize Accessories can be your best friend when styling in-between hair. Your hair might be too short to pull into a ponytail, but there are other hair accessories that can work wonders on short hair. One of the best accessories is the basic bobby-pin. These come in many stylish varieties. For example, you can find them with attachments such as sparkly butterflies or in a variety of colors. The traditional bobby-pins are still available if you want a more natural approach. You can use these pins to tuck hair up at the sides or in the back. Use the smaller bobby-pins to sweep short hair up completely. The butterfly clip, which is available in many different sizes, is another option. The shorter your hair, the smaller the clip. Use these clips to sweep hair off your face. They too are found in a variety of colors and styles. They are easy to use and won’t break your hair. Cover Up Also consider using a cover-up — hats or scarves. You can throw on any kind of hat with an outfit and hide your hair completely. You can do the same with scarves. Try different techniques with your scarf to get the best look possible. Appliances Appliances are also useful when trying to style in-between hair. If you are trying to let your layers grow out, try curling your hair. This will hide your layers a bit since curly hair shows layer growth much less than straight hair. Use hot rollers or a curling iron for best results. If you like the curls you might want a perm until your hair grows to the desired length. Flat irons are great for shorter hair as well. Some short pixie style hair tends to get a bit frizzy. Narrow flat irons are perfect for styling short hair. Products Using the right products is also key to getting a great style from in-between hair. If your hair gets frizzy, try using a straightening gel as soon as you get out of the shower. You can also use a deep conditioner to avoid frizz. To help stimulate hair growth, massage your head for at least 2 minutes while you shampoo. The in-between hair stage doesn’t have to be painful. Follow these tips and you might even enjoy your new ‘do. Visit Women’s Hair Styles to learn more. Ron King is a full-time researcher, writer, and web developer, visit his website at Website. All Aboard the Workout Express!

April 19th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Merilee Kern We are living in a time-urgent society where the stakes to be professionally successful, socially admired and physically fit are ever present. These goals DO NOT have to be mutually exclusive, as we Modern Moms can have our proverbial cake and eat it too particularly when it comes to physical fitness! How? The key is to optimize whatever time can be spent on fitness-related endeavors. Even just 20 minutes of exercise most days of the week are enough to improve your health and reduce your risk of disease. Thirty minutes will help to increase your fitness level and stamina. Forty-five or more minutes will help you to optimize fat loss. The first step is believing that you are worth it, and that a fit body is a sexy body. In an effort to balance all of the pieces of the pie we call life and, as they say, enjoy the ride, the following tips and tools employing sound exercise principles will help you Modern Moms turbo charge your workouts to get more results in less time: Combine your upper and lower body exercises Cut your strength routine in half by incorporating exercises for several body parts. For example, while performing a lunge, add a set of bicep curls to the movement. Choose compound exercises - exercises that work several muscle groups simultaneously are more time efficient than isolation exercises, which focus on one major muscle group. Examples of compound exercises include the leg press, squat, chest fly, walking lunge and seated row. Circuit train With minimal equipment, you can set up stations alternating cardio activities with strength training activities. This will keep your heart rate up so that you can get both the aerobic and anaerobic (strength) benefits. A sample circuit might include: jump rope, bicep curls, jumping jacks, push-ups, jog in place, squats, mini-trampoline and dips. Repeating the circuit up to three times is guaranteed to boost your metabolism in under 30 minutes. Interval train Using active rest and work ratios will allow you to workout at the upper and lower levels of your fat burning zone and optimize calories expended. You can start with brisk walking for 2 minutes and jogging for 30 seconds. Then progress to 2 minutes of brisk walking and 1 minute of jogging. Eventually progress to two minutes of each and ultimately to spending less time walking and more time jogging. Increase your intensity by picking up the pace, you can cover more miles and ultimately burn more calories in less time. You may need to work up to higher intensities gradually, but you will become more efficient in the process and be able to cut back on the duration of your exercise sessions. Stock up on 30-minute exercise videos Check out the latest videos that accommodate every level of fitness, body part and workout style. Four 30-minute videos a week could add up to 18 pounds burned in a years time. Multi-task use your time on the bike to catch up on professional literature, review notes for a presentation or update you palm pilot. That will keep you up to date and save you time in the office. Schedule you next meeting at the gym it is not unusual today to have a business meeting on the tennis or racquetball court or golf course. It can be a welcomed change for all parties involved and you get to exercise while you are being paid. Pick up the pace - Increase your speed any chance you get like at the grocery store or mowing the lawn. Run errands literally. The calories can add up significantly and keep your metabolism burning at a higher level all day long. Make it a lifestyle change - by eliminating some of lifes modern conveniences and getting more physical, you can expend up to an additional 800 calories a week. That can add up to 11 pounds lost at the end of a year. So, start taking the stairs even if you work on the 10th floor itll get easier. Park your car in the last spot and keep your sneakers close by at all times. You never know when the opportunity will arise to go for a walk, hit the gym or join in with the kids at the field. Turn time wasters into time savers - contract muscle groups while standing in line or driving, stretch at your desk, go for a walk on coffee breaks. Remember that three ten-minute intervals are just as good as one 30-minute session. When possible, workout at lunch and then eat at your desk. Incorporate mind & body exercises choosing a discipline like yoga or pilates will not only give you the physical benefits of a well toned body, but you will also enjoy the relaxation and stress relieving enhancements as well. Make time Schedule 30-minute workouts in your appointment book 1-month in advance and keep that commitment the same way you would any other meeting. Set your alarm, watch or palm pilot to go off when its time to exercise. Sex counts While I wouldnt suggest replacing a formal exercise program with sex, it certainly does burn calories. The more fit you are, the more enjoyable all activities, including sex, will be. Exercise saves you time The more fit you are, the less sleep you need, so you can add more time to your day and have more energy for you daily tasks. Exercise could be adding longer and stronger years to your life that time is priceless. Child health advocate, weight-loss industry veteran and former bodybuilding champion Merilee A. Is Pain Stopping You From Losing Weight?

April 16th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Daniel Marein-Efron If you are overweight and suffer from pain in your feet that radiates from your heel, you are not alone. Almost one quarter of overweight people suffer from plantar fasciitis, a debilitating condition that causes heel pain and can limit a persons ability to walk or exercise. It is estimated that one out of every ten people will suffer from heel pain at some point in his or her life. Being overweight and suffering from heel pain can create a vicious cycle. We all know that exercise is a key component to losing weight. The problem is that heel pain often strikes when you put more stress on your feet by increasing your physical activity. If heel pain then forces you to limit exercise, it becomes challenging to lose weight and can actually cause an increase in weight. Increasing weight and a sedentary lifestyle can cause more heel pain and other common health problems, such as depression and heart disease. The good news is that when properly treated, most heel pain improves in 6 to 8 weeks. The bad news is that most people do not have the information to properly treat it. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons estimates that 2 million people seek treatment for plantar fasciitis every year in the United States, and several million more go untreated. Those who dont seek treatment often hope that plantar fasciitis will just go away on its own which it usually doesnt. Daniel Marein-Efrn, founder of a new company called Heeling Solutions, suffered from heel pain and weight gain for over a year. He became frustrated with his lack of improvement after investing thousands of dollars in special foot devices and visits to the podiatrist. He sought out the nations experts on the subject of heel pain and found that the solution did not involve surgery or a magic pill, but several months of special stretches, icing, extra support for his feet and modifications to his lifestyle. After several months of sticking to this regimen, he was free of plantar fasciitis and training for a marathon. The first steps to relieving heel pain can be as simple as stretching your foot before getting out of bed in the morning, icing your foot regularly and wearing proper footwear, says Jeffrey S. Peterson, M.A., M.D Northern California Institute of Sports Medicine. Many people also require additional steps such as using orthotics in their shoes or wearing a supportive foot device at night called a night splint. How do you know if you have plantar fasciitis? Only a licensed medical professional can confirm your diagnosis. Seek out a practitioner who specializes in conditions of the foot and ankle, such as a podiatrist or orthopedist. The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is intense pain with the first few steps in the morning. It can strike people of any age and is most common in people who are runners, overweight or spend a lot of time on their feet. For more information, go to www.heelingsolutions.com, or http://orthoinfo.aaos.org. Daniel Marein-Efron is a former plantar fasciitis sufferer and President of Heeling Solutions LLC. Virginia Workers’ Compensation Brain Injury: A Very Big Problem

April 14th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Jerry Lutkenhaus FIRST, if you suffer a head injury while working in Virginia and you start receiving workers’ compensation benefits (weekly wage replacement checks and medical care) for this work place injury, it would appear you have no problems but things are not always what they seem for your comp claim in Virginia. SECOND, the usual procedure is when you suffer the head injury, the insurance company for your employer will send you a form to sign which will be filed with the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission. The Commission will then enter an award based on that form. The insurance form is called “An Agreement to Pay” form. THIRD, the important thing to note is the paragraph on the form that describes your injury. Most of the time if you have had a head injury, the form will say only “head injury.” When you sign the form, it is your agreement that this is the only injury you have. FOURTH, the problem that arises is that the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission (which regulates workers’ compensation in Virginia) and the Virginia Court of Appeals which hears appeals from the Commission have decided that “head injury” on the Agreement to Pay form does not include “brain injury” even if the “brain” has been injured when the head injury occurred at the time of the original accident. FIFTH, the next problem is that the Commission and the Court of Appeals has decided that you only receive compensation for the injuries you have listed on the Agreement to Pay form and you only have two (2) years from the date of your accident to amend the Agreement to Pay form to add new injuries (such as a brain injury) if this was not inserted on the original Agreement to Pay form). SIXTH, the remedy is to file a Claim for Benefits with the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission within two (2) years of the date of one’s accident and add “brain injury” to your claim. ,b>SEVENTH, if the Agreement to Pay only says “head injury,” then a major problem is created after the claimant has been paid 500 weeks of compensation. Normally, the cap on workers’ compensation in Virginia is 500 weeks of compensation for almost all injuries. However, there are a few exceptions to the 500 week cap. One of those exceptions is a “brain injury” but not a head injury. EIGHTH, thus if one has had one’s injury listed as a “head injury” and not a “brain injury” and 500 weeks of compensation have elapsed and one is still “disabled,” you would want to extend benefits under the 500 week “brain injury” exception in Virginia. However, because you never amended the Agreement to Pay form to add “brain injury” you would likely be barred from having your compensation extended beyond 500 weeks by the Commission. In summary, if one has a serious head injury in Virginia, it is critical to always file a Claim for Benefits within two (2) years to add a “brain injury” claim. This is so because the ill effects of any head injury could develop later and could always involve a brain injury. You should not lose your rights because of this “technicality.” Copyright 2006, Jerry Lutkenhaus. Falling In Love With Singaporean Girls

April 11th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Dao Jones A few months ago I noticed a beautiful Asian girl in my school. I am a white guy living in Portland, Oregon, but I have known many Asian people and have studied Chinese for a few years. Anyway, I learned from a classmate that she was from Singapore. She seemed very shy and it seemed like she could not speak English well. I asked my friend about her and he told me she was an exchange student. Since it was nearly the end of the year I decided not to attempt to ask her out or even talk to her. I would see her everyday in school though, and I could not help looking at her she was so beautiful. As the weeks went by we made more and more eye contact, but being kind of awkward with girls I have never met and not being very knowledgeable on female flirting tactics I thought that she was just making eye contact with me because I couldnt stop staring at her. One day she actually came up to me though and after apologizing a lot for bothering me she asked if I would please accept a piece of paper with her name and number on it and in return give her mine. I was very surprised to say the least. American girls never would approach me in that way. Specially they would not apologize for wanting to give me their number; Im usually the one who has to beg for the girls number. We exchanged numbers, and after the reality set in that the girl I have been dreaming about for months had just made a move towards me I became very excited and called her as soon as I got home. I learned that she was an exchange student and was not allowed to have a boyfriend but was very interested in me and did not care about the rule since it was the end of the year. After dating a while I took her to a dance club for her 18th birthday. We connected so well because she could communicate easily with me using a mix of English and Chinese. We simply loved being with one another. At first I didnt want to get serious because I knew she would leave me and return to Singapore soon, but she was so amazing that I had to try to be with her so I asked her if she wanted to get serious and try for a long term (and soon to be long distance) relationship. She was overjoyed that I asked her and we kissed and hugged for a couple of hours. We were together a few months and in that time together we had a strong and intimate relationship. She has been the most amazing lover I have ever had and could not imagine intimacy being better with anyone else. We decided to try to stay together and she is very devoted to me. We use electronic means to stay in touch and visit each other every few months. I love her more than anything else and want to make her happy. She is not used to guys treating her the way I treat her. She says that her ex-boyfriends in Singapore would never say, I love you or be so gentle in bed. She said that that is why she is so shy. We are not getting married next year. My message to other men and women out there who are in relationships like this is that they should stay positive because such relationships do work. Your Snowflake Stopper Could Keep Your Summer Wedding Nice and Cool

April 10th, 2008 by emyleperez

By Terry Price When it comes to planning your wedding, there are plenty of things you need to think about and there never seems to be enough time to do them all! There are lots of different topics that you should be familiar with prior to planning and arranging your wedding. Everything from flowers to photographers, right down to the snowflake shaped wine stopper. You should do some homework so your wedding day will be the truly enjoyable event that you want it to be! You have only one chance to make this day as perfect as possible. When booking your reception hall, there are some important questions you need to ask. Once you’ve narrowed down the venue or location you want, here are significant things you need to ask. When it comes to interviewing the management, keep in mind that you are not there just doing them a favor. They are a business and you are hiring this company to provide a very important service, so you shouldn’t hesitate to ask them all the questions you want. Before any funds are turned over, make sure first of all you are dealing with a reputable company and that your representative is experienced. Ask how long the company has been in business, and how many events they have hosted, and if in fact, they have hosted weddings the same size you are planning. Ensure they have up-to-date health permits and proper licenses, and ask what kind of insurance coverage they have. Always ask for several references and phone numbers of folks they have served in the past. Be sure to follow up. Call these people and do some digging to see what their experience has been. Find out, for instance, whether the snowflake wine stopper is included in the price, or not. You will find that the majority of reception halls just rent out the space, and everything else including those special wedding favors you may want, you will have to supply yourself. In fact, you may have to supply the chairs, tables, table settings, favors, food and even the servers! On the other side of the coin, there are halls that offer package deals and take care of everything which includes the setup, clean-up, food, favors, stocked bar, servers, wedding cake, champagne toast, valet parking, coat check and yes, even the silver snowflake stopper, if you’ve requested it. You’ll find that most reception halls fall somewhere in between these two extremes. If the hall offers on-site catering, don’t make the assumption that they will automatically provide tableware, glassware or even the flatware, as this cost might be extra. If you’re planning a casual wedding with a potluck buffet to cut costs, make sure the hall can accommodate that arrangement. Be sure to check if the servers, coat check, valet parking, etc, are included in the cost, or if there is there an additional cost. How about providing food or beverages for your band or DJ, for the wedding professionals and the photographer, and are they included in the head count. Get an itemized list of everything they include right down to the snowflake stopper, if you request it! Ask also about which services they do not offer, just to be very clear. How about other events planned for the same day? Many halls have multiple event rooms and you need to know exactly what type of event is going on before, during, and after your wedding reception. Are the rooms divided by removable partitions? This is important as you could get DJ sounds pouring through from another event and drowning out your band. If your event lasts a long time, will you have to hurry your guests out to accommodate another crowd coming in? This is especially important during the busy wedding season, which falls between May and October. Saturdays, also, are the most popular day, so remember that a popular facility with multiple halls may be fully booked and hosting more than one event. Know exactly what you can expect and ask the managers how they are prepared to handle the crowds. In the event something goes wrong, find out whether office staff or management will be on site for the event. This is important as your parking valet may not show up or the plumbing in one of the bathrooms may pose a problem. If something does go wrong, you will want the peace of mind to know that a qualified person will have the experience and authority to take care of the crisis for you.
