By Sean Martin Why is it that so many people go to railroad job interviews and dont get hired? Its easy to get carried away and just go to an interview thinking your going to ace it. However the cold hard reality is it takes proper preparation and the right answers to the interviewers questions. Sometimes you will be interviewed by a female and sometimes a male. It makes a big difference to your answers as to who is asking them. Many times you will be interviewed by both. Just because youre interviewing for a blue collar job does not mean you want to show up with a baseball cap on and a five oclock shadow on your face. You still need to dress respectful and clean cut. Another mistake I see potential candidates make is not being prepared. If the railroad sends you a letter or email and asks you to bring certain items to the interview with you then make sure you bring exactly what they ask for. I remember in my interview process two guys showed up without a copy of their application. The email they received from the railroad company said to bring a copy of your application. They did not. They were simply told to leave. No application No job interview If you cant follow simple instructions then they are not going to waste their time interviewing you.The next thing is your application. I did think long and hard about my options and decided that for me, at this time, this was right. I have under taken just about every diet going, counted calories, drunk only soup, cut out carbs, reduced fat, you name it I have tried it! Sometimes I have had a good result and sometimes I have worked hard and lost nothing. In a way losing the weight was mostly easy, whenever you start a new diet you are motivated, so you stick to the regimen, exercise and you see pounds fall of. But the problem is, for me anyway, keeping it off once the motivation wanes, once you stop the diet and try to eat “normal” foods. Health issues were starting to be a problem for me. I wanted to lower my risks, so I decided I needed a more permanent solution. The choices were between gastric banding and gastric bypass surgery. I looked at gastric bypass surgery but felt that was too drastic, having part of my stomach cut away to make the small pouch, even though it is completely reversible. So I decided on a gastric band. In this, a band is positioned around the outside of the stomach and once fluid is added to it, it causes a restriction, forming a small pouch at the top. You then can only eat limited amounts of food as this small pouch fills quickly and gives you a feeling of being full. You drastically cut down on the amount of food you eat causing you to lose weight easily and it makes it difficult, unless you continually overeat and stretch the pouch, to put weight back on. An unpleasant episode that must be endured in order to reach some weight target, often in time for a major event such as a wedding, your own or your children’s. Afterwards, with a big sigh of relief that its over, we get back to normal eating. In what seems no time at all, especially if a holiday is involved, the weight is back where it was, and you wonder; was it worth it? The truth about diets is that they train us to “live on less” so normal food is now far too much. Many people have managed to get to their chosen weight and then find that they cannot come off the diet without putting the weight back on. They are trapped in a regime of half starvation and misery. Their life revolves around how much can they eat and when they eventually break, which they always do, they eat like it was an Olympic event. The answer is simple - just eat slightly less for all of the time. It may be slower than you would like but it works, and its forever not just for Christmas or weddings. If you reduce the fat content of your ‘normal’ food you can eat an enormous amount of other stuff, so you won’t feel hungry. You will actually eat less calories without eating less food. Avoiding fat is easy. Obvious targets are dairy fats and margarines. Spread butter or margarine thinly, or buy fat-reduced spreads, or even better, try without. It works for sandwiches with lettuce and tomato to provide some moisture but I’d rather have some spread on my toast than just jam. Trim the fat off your meat and bacon before cooking. Try semi-skimmed milk and then progress to the fully skimmed. Ignore the slightly grey colour and enjoy its increased calcium and vitamins compared to the greasy un- skimmed product. Vegetarians should also be aware that many vegetable-based products could be as heavy in fat as those that are meat based. Biscuits are generally very high in fat, typically around 25% but much higher again if chocolate coated. The problem with biscuits is that you can easily take in a substantial part of your daily calories without feeling as though you have eaten anything but a few mouthfuls.
