The 7 Musts of Marketing: How to Build a System That Makes Clients Come to You

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Adam Urbanski While preparing for my second annual Small Biz Marketing Summit (a training seminar for service professionals) I was looking for the overall theme to promote my event. After days and weeks of struggling to come up with the right idea, I finally stumbled upon results of little known research that revealed the seven marketing habits of super-successful companies. Instantly I knew I found my Holy Grail. What surprised me the most, was how information so elemental can be so profound at the same time. Im almost afraid that you might dismiss it at a first glance. So give it a read. I’m sure you will get ideas how to tune-up your own marketing system. MARKETING MUST #1 — HAVE A PLAN Most business owners and professionals are “doers”. There is nothing wrong with that - that’s why they work for themselves and get things done! But often they get so busy they lose sight of where they are going and how they want to get there. But creating a marketing plan sounds so intimidating even the thought of it scares the living-jibbies out of most people. Fact is, you dont have to kill a tree to create simple marketing plan. Start by listing your ideal clients, the top three to five lead generating strategies to reach them, and first few implementation steps. Its amazing how a one page document can get you focused and motivated to take the right action. MARKETING MUST #2 — BE UNIQUE I once heard a statement that on Coca-Cola’s balance sheet over 90% of their value is represented by their “brand equity”. If building a brand is good enough for them, don’t you think it could do some good for you? How do you differentiate yourself? What makes you, your services or products unique? With the explosion of service businesses it should be your top concern - to set yourself apart from the pack. If you are providing an ordinary product or service it may be hard to set yourself apart based on what or how you do it. But there is one thing in your business that no one else can duplicate YOU! MARKETING MUST #3 — GET VISIBILITY If no one knows what you do you will always struggle to get enough business. Advertising, direct mail, networking, public speaking, publishing articles are just a few ways of getting the word out. And, dont forget about free publicity - what’s better than having someone else talk about you! Stop being busy and take time to learn how to develop effective announcements and “hooks”. With a bit of effort you may get all sorts of media attention that will give your business the ultimate marketing boost you are always looking for. MARKETING MUST #4 — BUILD A VIRTUAL MARKETING HUB A strong online presence can become a serious marketing weapon. But if you are confused how to make your web site generate leads and sales - you are not alone. In fact over 95% of small business web sites are a total waste of time and money. They will never make their owners a penny! Amazingly, with a few simple and inexpensive tweaks you can turn your online brochure into a lead and profit generating machine. MARKETING MUST #5 — EDUCATE YOUR MARKET Do you ever feel that in order to market your services and get clients you have to overly boast what a great job you do? That leaves you feeling sleazy and unprofessional. No wonder you avoid marketing all together! However, most potential clients dont have a clue about all the ways you can help them. Its your job is to educate them. Write articles, give public talks, publish a newsletter or even write a book. These strategies can turn your expertise into industry recognition, credibility in your field, and make you feel like the ultimate professional all while you are marketing your services! (Personal note: Oh please, don’t give me excuses that you are not a public speaker or are not a good writer… If a schmuck like me - with only high-school diploma and English as a second language can write a short article and deliver a presentation… Believe me - you’ve got no excuse!) MARKETING MUST #6 — FOLLOW-UP EFFECTIVELY More than 80% of all sales are made on or after five contacts with the prospect. Yet, most people give up after the second follow-up call. Why? They don’t know how to consistently stay in touch with their prospects, referral sources and existing clients. Develop and automate a follow-up system that gets results and doesn’t take over your life. Publish a newsletter or ezine, collect and distribute interesting articles, regularly send out postcards with a short tip or quote. There must be a million inexpensive ways to regularly put your name in front of your clients and prospects. Just get started and do it consistently! MARKETING MUST #7 — NEGOTIATE LIKE A PRO! If you are anything like a typical service provider or small biz owner, chances are it’s a bit tough for you to ask for the sale. Even though you know the great benefits your clients get from working with you I bet at times you still get chocked up when it comes to closing the deal. Stop leaving money on the table only to learn that your competitors gobbled up the deals that belonged to you. Develop an advisor-like selling paradigm. Learn and practice consultative sales approach and never again feel guilty about closing the deal. MARKETING HABIT #8 CONTINUOUSLY IMPRESS YOUR CLIENTS! Wait a second I told you there were seven marketing habits so whats this number eight all about. You see this is the last, simple, often overlooked element of marketing consistently under-promise and strategically over-deliver! Yeah, I know, its so simple its almost embarrassing to mention it here. But often we get so focused on getting the business we forget to pamper the clients we already have. Just for the sake of it - imagine what would happen to your referral rate if you were always as responsive to your clients as you were on the day before they hired you. (c) 2006. Adam M. Urbanski. Make Your Prospects Say Yes!

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Carl Brown 6 Secrets to Stellar Sales Presentations Every sale is won or lost in the presentation. Regardless of product, industry, or market every sale has the same basic components: A prospect who wants a product, a product, and a sales person who will or will not help that customer buy. These 6 secrets will help you make presentations that build your customers understanding and excitement to a point where they will buy from you right now. The operative word in right now selling is VALUE if a customer sees the value of your product they are sold if they do not they wont buy. This 6-step process will give you the secrets to building value in a way that your customers react to over and over again. 1. Make a Big Fat Claim Every Presentation needs a Big Fat Claim (B.F.C.) when you start your presentation you should have an obvious value for your clients that makes them say well how do you do that. Your B.F.C. should hint at a solution to a real problem your customers have. Then the rest of the presentation backs up the claim. When Glasstree.com sells, websites in the retail space the Big Fat Claim is Never Pay for Website Updates Again! It focuses on the core benefit of the service and tells the client exactly what they can expect to get. 2. Tell em How Its Done Directly after presenting the big fat claim you have to back it up with a quick one or two sentence explanation of how you do what you claim. This will build your credibility and allows the customer to say: oh that makes sense or I never would have thought of that. This step of the presentation is to introduce the idea that makes the Big Fat Claim possible and actually takes it from a sensational idea to a reality. This step is the difference between hype and a solid sales presentation. Our How its Done is We have built a dynamic platform that, allows you to update the website for yourself eliminating the need to pay a web designer to make simple changes to your site. Here you go from the benefit to the customer to the feature that makes it possible. 3. Present Your Credentials This is the point where you shift gears, give a little background information on your company, and tell the 30-second story of how you got to where you are now. Tell people why you decided to sell what you sell. What were the motivating factors for you? I tell people I was in the industry for years, but when I saw this product I realized that there was no way I could compete with it as an individual so I got in contact with the creators and worked out a deal that allows me to share it with you. This little bit of personal information helps build trust and rapport 4. Ask Leading Questions Directly after telling your story you need to initiate a conversation that intertwines your product and the clients vision. Before you present list the top 10 benefits of your product then creating questions that dove tail into those benefits. As an example: Ask the question do you mail brochures or other information to out of town clients that request it? (Prospect Answers) With a well built website you could direct people to your site while they are on the phone and show them the product information immediately while its high on their priority list. By leading with the question, you can make your benefit oriented point in a way that connects directly to the clients situation. 5. Close it on the Spot Always end a sales call with a movement to the next phase of your selling process. At the very least, you need to get the prospect to commit to your next meeting and decide what will happen at that meeting. The ideal situation is you do the paperwork and set an appointment to pick up detailed information you need to complete the process. For a great close, first refer to your Big Fat Claim and ask if the client what they are going to do with the key benefit, then ask for the order. Example: Mr. prospect what do you plan to do with the money you will save on web site updates. Prospect answers: that sounds like a good idea. Our next step is to set up your account; Ill need your signature on this agreement, and a check for $428. A simple trial close -close like this allows your customer to tell you if they have an unanswered question about your product or give you the go ahead without a lot of pressure. 6. Rehash What They Get Right before leaving the table take a moment to review what did the client just pay you for, What are they supposed to do next, and what extra service might help them move forward. Example: We are going to build you a 10 page website with (recite page names) and were going to design it in blue and orange and use the logo you provide via e-mail. Youll send that e-mail to me at myname@email.com then it will take us about 10 days to complete your website design. While were setting up your account, would you like to purchase a copy of our internet promotion manual so that you have a running start on promoting your new site? Follow this six-step checklist and you will give stronger presentations that close more deals for you and give a higher value to your services. Go one-step at a time from moderate interest to a value your customer cant ignore. So to review the steps: Make A Big Fat Claim Tell Em How its Done Present Your Credentials Ask Leading Questions Close It On The Spot Rehash What They Get Commit to these six steps in every presentation and you will see a dramatic increase in the number of yeses you get. Energy Healing for Your Sick Children, Family Members & Friends with Love

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Brent Atwater The alternative medicine of Love is a great Healer. Often times when a child is sick, a Mother doesn’t know where to turn other than to allopathic medicine. Complementary to and integrated with traditional medical treatments and procedures is love. There have been many “miraculous” turn arounds and healings that have been supported by a caregiver or family member who thru love have held hope and belief that the patient will get well against all the odds. A caregiver’s loving touch, prayers and contribution to a positive environment and positive attitudes can help change the course of an illness. Below are some suggestions to help facilitate healing in someone you love. As a caregiver, you can learn ways to help your “patient’s” environment, which in turn contributes to their well-being. The environment that surrounds a sick person takes on the energy of those people that participate in the patient’s healing journey. It is imperative to have all those that are working towards the health of the patient to have a positive “can do” attitude. Even unspoken dismay and disbelief permeates the patient’s and the environment’s energy field, and contributes negative energy that cancels a positive atmosphere. Holding a positive loving attitude creates a subliminal environmental energy support system that inspires the desire to live and to have better health. Unless medically prohibited, plants help an environment, as do cheerful colors, soothing music, prayer and laughter. Laughter therapy is rapidly gaining ground as a healing modality, like positive attitudes. Create a happy book, wall, or poster board with fun pictures to contribute to positive mental health that assists healing. The power of laughter and positive attitudes both trigger the brain to create chemicals that cause the body to create better immune system responses which is critical when combating illness. On a physical level, a caregiver can use their love to help the patient’s health.(Information for this exercise: you receive energy with your left hand and send energy if you are right handed, and the reverse if you are left handed.)If you are right handed, placing your left hand on your heart and your right hand on the patient’s left hand state: “Thru the Love of my heart I send you my life force energy to do with as you so choose on your healing journey.” This honors the patient’s journey, whether it is being physically cured or healing thru transition. Another technique is to hold the ball of the patient’s feet in the palm of your hands and state: “I send you my life force energy to use as you so choose, and it is my intent to remove any and all excess, unnecessary, toxic, pain and unhealthy energy and to replace that energy with the physically healing, pain free energy of the Christ White Light (or the Universe, or whatever power source that you acknowledge). So be it, it is done.” This helps the patient to become more balanced and stabilized. It has shown great results. Healing and the power of healing on all levels can to be summed up in the phrase “and the greatest of these is love.” Feel free to reprint this article in its original format. Garden Leaf Sweepers for Lawns, Paths and Borders - Which One for Your Garden?

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Val Scaresbrook Why remove leaves from the lawn? Although heaps of crispy leaves are lovely to scuffle through when out for a walk, they are less welcome on the lawn. Why? Because the grass suffers and may even die if the layers of leaves are not removed. A dense smothering blanket of leaves blocks the light and air, especially once the leaves become sodden with rain. What to do with the leaves? Fortunately, the chore of leaf sweeping is well worth the effort for the resultant leaf mould. Just bag up the leaves, or pile them up within a wire netting enclosure (jump up and down on them to make more space), and two years later you’ll have dark crumbly leaf mould for mulching around plants and improving the soil — all for free. What are the best tools for clearing up leaves? A rotary mower If your mower is a rotary with a grassbag, then you can easily use this to vacuum up leaves. They’ll be chopped up by the blades too, to aid composting. However, if the ground is soft, you can end up making quite a mess. Hand tools If you only have a small garden, then a sweeping brush for the hard surfaces and a rake for the lawn should be sufficient. Choose your rake carefully. The ideal leaf rake shouldn’t dig into the lawn like a scarifying rake, but instead glide over the surface, containing the leaves within its curved shape so that you can gradually accumulate a heap. Most hand tool companies include these in their range — choose tough wire or rubbery tines for longevity and expect to pay from around 15. Then comes the problem of transferring the leaves to barrow or bag. The traditional two boards are fine for moving wodges of leaves, but if you don’t like bending, a long-handled leaf grab (with plastic or metal blades from around 13-20) may suit you better. Mechanical sweepers A mechanical lawn sweeper collects leaves and other debris, so is a good choice for large lawns. As you push the sweeper along, its wide brush whirls the leaves off the lawn and into the collector. The working height is adjustable for use on paving or lawns, but don’t be tempted to use one on gravel, because the brush picks this up and throws it facewards. For this reason, goggles are a sensible precaution if there’s any chance of grit, stones or other small projectiles (eg acorns) lying on the lawn. Sweepers are usually around 60cm or more wide (from around 100), but not widely stocked due to limited demand. There are also towable versions to go behind your garden tractor or ride-on. Look for both types on one of the online garden equipment sites. A garden vacuum or blower A much noisier but easier method of clearing lawns is to use a powered blower, garden vac, or both. Battery, mains or petrol-engined hand-held blowers (to take the weight, most have a shoulder strap; some have wheels on the nozzle) and 4-wheeled blowers (from around 80) are useful for clearing large lawns and paving in broad sweeps, driving the leaves into a heap which is simple but time-consuming to move with a leaf grab. It’s speedier to suck up the leaf pile with a garden vacuum. The vacuuming process shreds the leaves a little, so they take up less space and rot down faster than whole leaves. Some blowers convert to vacuums, saving you the expense of buying two machines, but find out how easy it is to convert from one mode to another. Some have to have to be partly dismantled and reassembled, but Flymo’s Gardenvac, for example, is simple to switch modes with a lever. Hand-held petrol-engined blower/vacs cost from around 90 and are made by a number of companies, which you’ll see if you go to one of the online garden equipment web sites. If contemplating clearing very large areas of lawn and other flat surfaces, then a wheeled leaf and litter vac is much easier to use. You might track down a mains electric version, but petrol-engined machines are more common and widely available from groundsman’s suppliers and online (costing from around 450). Most have an optional extra wander hose (from around 100) for beds and borders inaccessible to the machine. By Lance Winslow Are you worried about the 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season and just know you may be stuck with no power for three or four weeks after a big storm? Are you concerned that you will be bored with nothing to do, no TV to watch and worried about rationing your food with nothing to do? Many people who have weathered storms are into quilting have noted it is a perfect time to do quilting. Simply Stock up on all the supply you will need in advance and if you are Stuck in your home you can do your hobby while you wait for authorities to turn on the power so you can watch TV and see what happened. Many times with the power out and the telephones off and even the water supplies corrupted they have found little old ladies doing quilting when their families were worried sick about them. They say; Oh I was fine and I just finished this quilt and then I started on this next one how do you like it? Isn’t that funny we worry of so much about other people, but those who have hobbies can usually ride out of storm and do their crafts until the storm and danger passes. If you are considering the potential eventuality of such a large category storm, which in effect strands you in your home for weeks on end then perhaps if you have a hobby and supplies you will not need to worry about any of this. Hurricanes are a great Time to do crafts and hobbies and you must Stock up with supplies in advance because all the stores will be close once the hurricane strikes your area. VOIP Technology Saves Money and Increases Flexibility

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Julia Hall Computer technology- and the Internet in particular- is changing the way we conduct out lives in some pretty dramatic ways. One of the most dramatic changes that the Internet has brought us is the ability to take more control over how we communicate with each other by telephone and how we spend our money on phone service. The specific technology that allows this is called Voice Over Internet Protocol, or VOIP for short. Voice Over Internet Protocol takes advantage the fact that data moves across the Internet without any of the constraints of conventional telephone calls when it comes to geography and distance. Just like you can send an email to anyone, anywhere in the world and download a web page from anywhere in the world without incurring long distance charges, Voice Over Internet Protocol technology allows you to call anyone in the world either without long distance fees or with sharply discounted long distance fees. Basically, VOIP converts both ends of a phone conversation into data that can be streamed back and forth across the Internet without any loss of sound quality or noticeable time lag. This revolutionary technology also makes it possible to for users of VOIP to call phone numbers that don’t use VOIP technology as well as the other way around. VOIP technology has actually been around since the late twentieth century. In those days though, the service was rather limited. For example, calls were only made using computers and, though calls between users of VOIP services were free, there was still a long distance charge for calls made from a VOIP user to a conventional phone number. Users of VOIP technology still saw the benefit of the service when calling conventional phone numbers in the form of reduced long distance rates. Now there are a number of services offering calling plans based on Voice Over Internet Protocol technology, including well known companies like Verizon and Vonage, as well as lesser known companies like SunRocket and Lingo. While there is a fair amount of variation in their services, these companies have a lot in common, including the improvements that they’ve made over the original VOIP services. Generally, these modern VOIP services offer free long distance inside the United States- often with Canada and Puerto Rico included- to any phone number whether it’s conventional or one that also uses VOIP. There’s still a long distance fee for most international calls, but most services will waive that fee if the number you’re calling uses the same service. Another big improvement over the original services is that most of these newer companies will let you use your own phone rather than a computer. In fact, in most cases, you don’t even have to have a computer at all! Although a computer is helpful for changing account settings on the service’s website and you can still make phone calls from a computer, all you really need is a high speed Internet connection and your own phone. The service will supply a special router that plugs into your Internet connection and that you can, in turn, plug your phone into. Such a set up is also very practical in the sense that allows you to use your phone just like you would with a conventional phone line. Both DSL and cable high speed Internet connections are ample for this service, but if you happen to have a cable connection, you can save even more money by getting rid of your phone line completely. Most VOIP services add even more value by providing all of the features free of charge that you would ordinarily pay extra for from a conventional phone service and charging a monthly rate that’s equivalent to- and often lower than- a basic phone line from a conventional telephone company. If you’re looking for a flexible way to keep in touch while saving money, then VOIP may be exactly the technology that you’re looking for. Julia Hall writes articles for consumers who want to find the latest VOIP Offers and news. She has written for many major publications about voice over internet phone services and how buyers can find the best deals. Follow her publications to find out how you can maximize your communications dollar without sacrificing quality while enjoying the best in VOIP service. Ending Relationships Gracefully

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. In my counseling practice, I often hear the question, How do I end a relationship without hurting someones feelings? Whether its a romantic relationship or a friendship, ending it gracefully is generally a challenge. The problem arises because so many people see it as a reflection of their worth when someone doesnt want to be with them. If I was good enough, this person would want to be with me, so there must be something wrong with me. There is another way to see this. The way I see it is that for each of us there is a relatively small number of people with whom we feel a deep connection. Whether you want to explain this as due to being part of the same soul group in the spiritual realm, or to having similar energies, or to chemistry, the fact is that we dont feel connected to most people. Just because I dont feel connected with someone doesnt mean there is anything wrong with them. Just because you dont feel drawn to spend time with someone doesnt mean there is anything wrong with that person, and just because someone doesnt connect with you doesnt mean there is anything wrong with you. Its just the way things are, and it has nothing to do with there being anything wrong with anyone. So if I say to someone, I dont feel a strong connection between us, I am simply stating a fact. I am not making a judgment about the persons adequacy or worth. All of us meet perfectly wonderful people with whom we just dont feel a connection. The person might be very attractive, have similar interests to us, and even be on a similar growth path or spiritual path. Yet we just dont connect. The spark that ignites friendship or romance just doesnt exist. If we could all accept that someone not wanting to be with us has nothing to do with our worth, we would not get hurt when someone says no to a relationship. I dont pretend to understand all the factors that create connection between two people. All I know is that all of us have the experience of connection with another that occurs deeply and rapidly, as well as the experience of a lack of connection. Many people have had the experience of being fixed up with someone because a friend said, I just know you two will like each other. You are so similar, only to discover a complete lack of connection. Katie, a client of mine, recently said to me, Everyone said Rick is perfect for me. We look good together, we have similar interests and backgrounds, we are the same religion, we are equal educationally, and he is a really sweet guy. I kept thinking that if I just gave it time, I would feel the connection. But it never happened. I felt so badly breaking up with him because there is nothing wrong with him, but the connection just isnt there. Is it anyones fault that the chemistry or connection isnt there? Of course not! There is nothing wrong with either Katie or Rick. The connection just isnt there for Katie. She couldnt make it be there. She ended up saying to Rick, You are a really terrific guy. I wish I felt the connection with you that I want to have with a partner, but I dont. Its not your fault its just not there. Whether or not Rick felt hurt by this is really up to him. Katie cant take responsibility for how he feels. If Rick has the belief system that not everyone will feel connected with everyone, he will not feel hurt. If he has the belief system that if a woman doesnt connect with him, there is something wrong with him, he will feel hurt. His hurt will come from his belief system, not from the fact that Katie broke up with him. Ending a relationship gracefully means speaking our truth without blame or judgment and not taking responsibility for anothers feelings. Randi, another one of my clients, recently told me that she was able to tell the truth rather than give herself up to avoid hurting someone. A friend had introduced her to Barb, thinking that Randi and Barb had a lot in common and could be good friends. Randi got together with Barb and felt no connection. In fact, she felt the opposite. While Randi felt that Barb was a sweet person, she also felt Barbs energy pulling on her in various ways. While some people might not mind needy energy, or even find it endearing, Randi didnt like it at all. She was pleased with herself because she was able to tell Barb that she just didnt feel a connection with her. Randi was able to let go of taking responsibility for Barbs feelings if Barb felt hurt by this. Is there always a way of breaking up or saying no to a relationship without someone getting hurt? Outdoor Barstools

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Jason Albright Outdoor barstools are used in home and commercial areas for gardens, balconies, patios, and decks. Outdoor barstools make it possible to enjoy the outdoors in the comfort of your own garden, yard, or poolside. They help extend the living and entertaining area of your home into a natural environment. A variety of styles and designs are available in outdoor barstools to suit the look and feel of your backyard. When you are choosing outdoor barstools, youll need to consider the type of material used to create them. The ideal outdoor barstool material is resistant to climate changes. Since the outdoor barstools will be exposed to the elements for at least part of the year, this is an important consideration. The outdoor barstools could be exposed to sun, rain, heat, dust and cold temperatures, depending on how often they were used. Choose outdoor barstools that are weather resistant and easy to clean. Metal outdoor barstools tend to last longer than other varieties, and wooden outdoor barstools need to be specially treated for the elements. Purchasing weather resistant outdoor barstools will prevent you from needing to move them when the weather changes. You may also want to consider getting folding outdoor barstools for easy transport. Outdoor barstools are available without backs or arms, however these features normally make them more comfortable to use. Other choices for outdoor barstools include swivel or stationary designs. Make sure to take careful measurements of the table or bar where the outdoor barstools are to be used. Youll want to choose an outdoor barstool that is 10 to 13 inches lower that the counter top. This will provide maximum comfort for your guests and ensure that your outdoor barstools will be used frequently. Outdoor barstools are available from local home improvement and furniture stores. They can also be purchased online from several retailers.
