By John Gilmore In our last article on depression we discussed the need to: 1) Work on your self image; 2) Work on creating a good social life; and 3) Find the core problem and work to correct it. This article is the first of three on dealing with your self image. At first I thought to do it in one article, but that would be impossible. About your self image you might say, Im depressed, not ugly. What does depression have to do with my self image? I would remind you that we are talking about the roots of the problem of depression, not the outgrowth. If you are feeling alone, if you are not connecting with the right people, or if you are not striving for what you want anymore, its very likely that you have given up because you think that you cant do it. Thats where the self image comes in. Your self image is one of a person who has been defeated, (like the dog in our first article) but the truth is that is not who you are. Think for a moment. Who do you think you are? What makes you feel good about yourself? If you are anything like me or several other people in western society; it will be helpful to look at your past experiences with family, friends, and in school, to answer this question. Lets explore what it was like when you started school. School is an institution that shapes your self image, and helps you decide who you are in the world. Other institutions do, but school is one whose affects follow you for many yearsprobably a lifetime. I remember when I went to school. I was much younger than anyone else. I was born late in the year, skipped kindergarten, and went straight to first grade. I wasnt used to, or interested in, being there. I remember working on workbooks matching pictures with words. We would write our answers on green pieces of paper with very wide spaces between the lines, print our names on top, and then pass them in. I remember getting a paper back once with a big golden star on the top, and with a one hundred and excellent written on it. I smiled. It made me feel good. I also noticed someone next to me with a paper with a big red F on their paper, circled. We used to call them flagpoles. At that time I didnt know what it was. As time went on we learned that people with Fs were stupid. The ones with the As and the stars were smarter and better. We also learned, eventually, that it was all right to make fun of the people with the Fs. When they got angry for being made fun of and started fights, we learned that stupid, violent, people often got the Fs. The attacks just confirmed it. So a lot of my esteem was based on how I performed. If I could remember what the teacher told me and parrot it back better than anyone else, I was a good person. When it came to playing sports, I discovered that it was the same. If I could perform better, people liked me, and patted me on the back. If I missed the ball too many times, people seemed to hate me. This is a very simple example of what happens during our lives. We are often judged on how we perform. It happens so much that we internalize these judgments. We begin to base our worth and value, our self esteem, on how well we perform. If we cannot perform as well as we like, we consider ourselves worthless failures, on a subconscious level. After that we withdraw from a world that we arent worthy of, and give up on our hopes, dreams and goals until we end up with nothing. This having nothing, especially no hope, is depression. It is horrible to be depressed, but one thing that depression does is bring us to a state where we can look at the world and see that a lot of the things that we have learned most of our lives just arent true. We have all been sold a dead elephant that we cant talk about, and we have learned to keep beating on that dead elephant trying to get it to move. This realization is dangerous if we do not take it a step farther and realize that not being able to conform to the lie is what is causing us grief. This realization is a launching pad for another realization that will bring us a happy, more fulfilling life: How we perform is not most important, how we are is. Are you working from a strategy of performing, or being? The artist is an artist whether he can paint like Picasso or not, because something inside of him cries out to express his inner beauty through painting. If he ignores it and becomes a computer programmer, that part of him is still fighting to be fulfilled. Your depression may just be the part of you that needs to be expressed. The practical thing that comes out of this article: judge yourself and your worth based on how you are, not on what you can do. Begin to do the things for which you have been called. This is the first step at dealing with depression. Do your life calling. There are thousands of books available that can help you do the inner work, unfortunately some are much better than others. How I Overcame Anxiety/Panic Attacks

By Susan Norrad Has this ever happened to you, out of the blue, for apparently no reason at all? You suddenly start experiencing any or all of the following symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain or discomfort such as tightness, lightheaded, dizziness, faint, palpitations, a pounding heart, sweating, trembling or shaking, a choking sensation, nausea or stomach cramps, numbness or a tingling sensation, chills or hot flashes. Then you experience a fear of losing control or goingcrazy and even a fear of dying. If you suffer from anxiety, then you already know thatyou are having an attack. If you are experiencing mostof the symptoms above and do not know what is happening to you, there’s a good chance that it is ananxiety/panic attack. The first thing you should do is to have your doctor check you out. Do not be afraid to have it checkedif you think it’s anxiety. At one time, people wouldfeel embarrassed when they found out that it was “allin their head”. But it’s not all in your head. Anxietyand panic attacks are real and you’d be surprised to learn how many people suffer from this condition. Sadly, many suffer quietly at home, too afraid to venture beyond their safe place. I have had anxiety attacks on and off for over 20years. My doctor told me it was anxiety, but I was told to simply try to relax. Over the years, more has been learned about anxietyand panic attacks, as well new drugs have been developed to alleviate them. But the drugs only mask the symptoms and they comewith many unwanted side effects. I was also told thatI would be on the drug for two years, then I would have to stop taking them and go through withdrawal. So I stopped taking my prescription after a few days. I decided that I would have to find a way to stop theattacks myself. Here is what has worked for me. First, make thedecision that you are going to take charge and beanxiety free. Imagine how it would feel to always feel good, to be able to go anywhere you want togo, to stand in crowds or in line-ups and be calm and relaxed just like everyone else. Remember, thoughts do create and if you keep thinking about the attacks, they do get worse. Do deep breathing exercises as often per day as you can remember. Breathe deeply through your nostrils. Breathe not only with your chest, but take a deep breath and expand your stomach. Exhale through your mouth. This seems to work much better than exhaling through your nostrils, but you can try it both ways to see whichworks best for you. I have learned that deep breathing is a good practice foranyone. It helps to increase your oxygen and rid the body of toxins and increase your energy. Your doctor will tell you to eliminate coffee, tobacco andalcohol from your lifestyle. This is good advice, however,if you feel that it is too much to ask of you at this time. I have some suggestions to follow so that you can still workon your goal of being anxiety free without having to give up so much at once. You can start out by cutting back on your coffee. Too much coffee can make you jittery and bring on an attack.I still have my coffee many times throughout the day, but I only drink a half cup at a time. So I have cut my intakein half and it feels like it gives me the same lift as drinkinga full cup. If you smoke, but feel that you cannot give up the cigarettesat this time, do the same thing as I did for the coffee. When you want a cigarette, only smoke half at a time. I chose to eliminate alcohol altogether. Even if I only drank a small amount, it was enough to guarantee an attack the next day. Alcohol does effect people differently, so if you find that alcohol does not always cause you to have anattack the next day, still try to reduce the amount you drink. Exercise can help a lot. You do not have to do strenuousexercises. I practice Qi Gong. It caught my attention whenI read how it can stop anxiety. The exercises are easy, even10 minutes a day can work for you. It has for me. Qi Gong exercises are energy work. When you have anenergy blockage in your body, it will cause dis-ease. Bypracticing Qi Gong, you remove the blockage and you can feel better rather quickly. When you practice Qi Gong, you not only heal your own body, but you increase your energy so that you can heal others. I have seen some amazing healings with Qi Gong. So it was no surprise that it can cure anxiety, too. Another suggestion, which is rather interesting, concernsthe stimulation of the “amygdala”, which is a small almond shaped organ in the brain. You actually have two of them,one on each side of your brain. I learned about the amygdala when I stumbled across a website that told how by stimulating them with your thoughts, it would increase your awareness, intelligence, etc. There were times when I was feeling good that I would feela sensation on my forehead. It would be a tingling feeling, or like someone was lightly touching my forehead with their hand. That is the same sensation that I can produce at any time now by putting my attention on my forehead. What is interesting about the amydala is that there is a method for curing anxiety, panic and phobias that says that the amygdala is responsible for those conditions and that this fact has been known for many years and is common knowledge among scientists the world over. So there could be something to it, based on my own experience. I still make it a point to focus my attention on my forehead aroundthe area of the amydala everyday. You might to give that a trytoo. Making Marriage Work, Part 3

By Margaret Paul, Ph.D. In Part 2 of this 5-part series, I offered a simplified version of the Six Step healing process of Inner Bonding: 1. Willingness 2. Choose the intent to learn 3. Dialogue with the feelings 4. Dialogue with your Higher Power 5. Take loving action 6. Evaluate the action. Part 2 described what it means to be in Step One - what it means to be willing to feel your feelings and take responsibility for them, rather than turn to protective, controlling behavior. We will now move on to Step Two: Choosing the intent to learn. In Step Two, you open to learning about the your thoughts, beliefs and behavior that are causing your pain. You let go of believing that it is your partner who is causing your pain and you are willing to take full, 100% responsibility for your feelings of fear, anxiety, anger, hurt, rejection, abandonment, numbness, guilt, shame, aloneness or depression. In Step Two, you open to your Higher Self so that you can compassionately embrace your painful feelings and learn about what you may be doing to cause them. For example, Joan feels angry, alone, rejected and abandoned because Justin spends a lot of time at work. Joan has been nagging Justin, judging him for his long hours and blaming him for her feelings. The result of this is that Justin has gotten even busier. He is obviously going into resistance, not wanting to be controlled by Joan. Joan is using her anger and blame to avoid feeling her pain. She is addicted to having her eyes on Justin and making him responsible for her feelings. When he spends time with her, she feels happy and worthy, and when he doesn’t she feels anxious and insecure. If Joan were to practice the Six Steps of Inner Bonding, she would start with Step One - welcoming and compassionately embracing her anger, aloneness, fear and resentment. She would be with these feelings just as a loving parent would be with a hurting child - with deep kindness and compassion toward herself. Then, instead of going into her usual protective, controlling behavior of blaming Justin for her feelings with her anger, nagging and complaining, she would move to Step Two, opening her heart to learning about what she might be telling herself and how she might be treating herself that is actually causing her own pain. She would open to her older, wiser inner self, her Higher Self, to help her stay open to learning. She would choose to be curious about her own beliefs and behavior, rather than judgmental toward Justin or herself. When Joan moves into Step Two, she is moving out of being a victim and into personal responsibility. This intent shift will immediately begin to change the interactions between Joan and Justin.
