RSS and Aggregators - So Easy A Caveman Can Use Them

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Sandra Martini According to Wikipedia, “RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts. Consumers of RSS content use special browsers called “aggregators” to watch for new content in dozens or even hundreds of web feeds. The initials “RSS” are variously used to refer to the following standards: ~ Really Simple Syndication ~ Rich Site Summary ~ RDF Site Summary” RSS allows publishers such as myself to automatically syndicate updates to my website and blog by publishing a feed link (see “Subscribe to My Website” section in the margin of my site for an example). You can subscribe to it by registering with an aggregator (also called a “feed reader” or a “news reader”). This sounds REALLY confusing, but it’s actually incredibly simple. Before we discuss the “how”, let’s discuss the “why”. Let’s say you regularly visit 10 blogs/websites, are a news junky who’s addicted to CNN, and are trying to keep up with the gossip that AOL’s Instant Messenger shares on the start-up screen (latest celebrity info). Normally, you would need to visit 12 websites/blogs and search for the updated/late breaking information. BUT, by subscribing to an RSS feed, you can go to your feed reader (sounds much less intimidating than “aggregator”) and read, IN ONE PLACE, the updates from all of the above. No more visiting 12 separate sites! Think of the time savings! You can keep up with the latest business articles, blog postings, the Iraq War and know whether Britney Spears is wearing underwear this week — all in one place and at NO COST! Now that you get the “why”, let’s discuss the “how”. Step 1: Get a feed reader. This a tool like an email program. It’s like getting an email every time one of your subscriptions updates their content, except no email address is required. There are many feed readers — some are online (like a webmail account), some are offline (you download the program to your computer), some are free and some aren’t. You may have come across feed readers already without realizing it. If you use personalized home page services like My Yahoo, My AOL, Google or My MSN, you have a feed reader — that’s how content like news, weather and stock quotes appear on your personal page. Step 2: Subscribe to feeds. You can now add content from any site to automatically get updates. Just click on the “My Yahoo” or “My AOL” image on any website or blog that you are interested in and you will automatically get updates from that website publisher. The updates will show on your personalized Yahoo, AOL, MSN, etc. page. No more having to visit several websites or blogs to keep up with your interests! Step 3: Relax and enjoy. You’re done and just need to relax and enjoy the information as it is gathered and presented to you. So what are you going to do with all the time you’re saving? Wedding Insurance - A Good Investment or a Waste of Money?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By Glenna Tooman You insure your car, your home, your health, and your life. Now you can insure your wedding too. Insurance for your wedding is one of the newest products on the market. But do you really need it, or is it a waste of money? Wedding insurance has been popular in Great Britain for several years. Today, a number of companies in the U.S. are also offering wedding insurance. Most policies offer varying amounts of coverage for varying fees with the most expensive policy costing less than $400 for a wedding held in this country. If you are planning a destination wedding, coverage can be obtained at a slightly higher fee. Most insurance policies will insure you against: Unforeseen weather problems (are you planning a wedding in Florida or the Bahamas during hurricane season?). This must be a major problem that will prevent you from holding the wedding as scheduled or that will prevent a majority of your guests from attending, not an afternoon thunder storm. Cancellation or postponement of the wedding. If you or the groom is in the military and is called to active duty, you might need to postpone the wedding. One of you or a close family member could be injured in an accident, have a sudden illness, or even die, necessitating a change in wedding plans. Insurance would cover the lost deposits. Failure of merchants to perform their contracted services. This might include a caterer who goes bankrupt just before the wedding or an event center that closes just before your event. Or perhaps the florist takes your money, then skips the country (all of these things have actually happened to unsuspecting clients). If you have paid a deposit or the full fee to such merchants, you will be reimbursed. Some policies will also cover the cost of legal fees to collect from errant merchants. Damage to the wedding attire. If the bridal salon catches fire and your gown or your attendants gowns are ruined, or the airline sends your gown to Timbuktu, you can be reimbursed. Photographs and video. If the photographer fails to show up or he neglects to put film in his camera, his equipment is defective, or the video camera doesnt work, you may be able to recreate the wedding photos at a later date and receive payment for the recreation. Theft of the wedding gifts or the wedding rings. If you leave your gifts in another room while your ceremony is occurring and they are stolen, or someone breaks into the car in which the gifts are being transported, you can be reimbursed. You can also be reimbursed for loss or theft of the wedding rings, but not the brides engagement ring. Professional counseling. Some policies will pay a limited amount toward counseling if you are left standing at the altar and you need therapy to work through it. Most policies will not cover the lost deposits if either the bride or groom changes their mind and breaks the engagement. Before you purchase wedding insurance, check with the company that writes your homeowners or renters insurance policy and find out exactly what is covered under that policy. Also check the liability insurance policy at the venue where your wedding will be held. Depending on your coverage, you may not need a separate insurance policy, or your current insurer may be able to add a rider to your existing policy to cover the wedding. Whether wedding insurance is right for you will depend on your circumstances, but it may be worth the cost, particularly if you are planning a destination wedding. Couples Relationship Assessment Quiz - Part 16 - Conscious Communication

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Glenn Cohen Are all your discussions calm and productive? Or would you say that many of them are heated, argumentative, and non-productive? All relationship partners will argue face it. But there is a safe, productive way to have these discussions. To Co-Create a Conscious Relationship, you must have structured discussions between the Sender the partner with the issue — and the Receiver — the recipient of the Senders thoughts and feelings. This assessment measures how well you and your partner communicate. This free set of assessments offers you the chance to find powerful answers. If you are willing to take the time to reflect on these questions, discuss them, and be honest with yourselves and each other, it can help you on your journey to Co-Create a Conscious Relationship so you can be Best Friends During the Day, Lovers at Night, and Partners for Life. The adventure of life gives us the incredible opportunity to learn and grow as individuals. I like to say that we do not stop learning, stretching, growing, maturing, and changing until we are 6 feet under. What happens so often is we go through life unaware that we dont know what we dont know. In this fast-paced world, many of us do not have or take the time to sit, take a deep breath, and really think about the statements addressed in these assessments. We usually do not reflect on and consider the impact the answers to these statements can have on our relationship. We must gain the awareness, learn the techniques, and practice the skills to Co-Create a Conscious Relationship. Take your time to think about each statement and be honest. One partner should use a black pen and the other partner a red pen. Rate your degree of agreement for each statement on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being a definite yes and 1 being a definite no. Write your score on the first line to the left of each statement. The second line is for your partners score. You may find it difficult to give certain statements a low score. You may worry that your response will hurt or offend your partner or create conflict. Honesty, however, is critical for the success of the Co-Create a Conscious Relationship program. Also, no matter what score your partner writes down, be supportive; do not get defensive, resentful, or angry. Thank him or her for being courageous and honest. All of the topics in this assessment series are covered in detail, with exercises, in my book The Journey from I-TO-WE. Conscious Communication _____ _____ - 1 - We have safe, honest, peaceful, respectful, and loving discussions. _____ _____ - 2 - We begin all of our discussions in a respectful, gentle, and loving manner. _____ _____ - 3 - We do not become reactive when we discuss sensitive issues. _____ _____ - 4 - We do not use Relationship Killer words or actions in our discussions and arguments. _____ _____ - 5 - We always give our partner the benefit of the doubt when we are triggered. _____ _____ - 6 - We do not project our own frustration and pain onto our partner when we communicate. _____ _____ - 7 - We know when it is time to take a break from an intense discussion or argument. _____ _____ - 8 - We signal each other when we start to feel emotionally overwhelmed by the discussion. _____ _____ - 9 - We know how to self-soothe and regulate our own emotions. _____ _____ - 10 - I trust my partner will create communication space where I feel safe, loved, and cared for. _____ _____ - Total Score You have 10 statements for a total possible score of 100. If your total is: 80 or higher — You scored in the upper percentile Congratulations! You have obviously taken the time to work, ensuring your relationship has the best chance to be successful. Though your relationship is strong, it can only benefit from gaining new awareness, new skills, and new techniques. Good luck in Co-Creating a Conscious Relationship! 60 79 — You scored in the average range Congratulations! Re-read the statements you scored low on and take the time to learn how to raise your score. Consider Co-Creating a Conscious Relationshipthrough gaining new awareness, new skills, and new techniques. You and the relationship will be much stronger on The Journey from I-TO-WE. 0 59 — You scored in the lower range Congratulations! You now know where you need to take the time to closely examine these areas of your relationship. It would benefit both of you to think about these statements, and work toward Co-Creating a Conscious Relationship through gaining new awareness, new skills, and new techniques. Commit to each other to give unselfishly and unconditionally to do whatever you need to do to make each other feel safe, loved and cared for I hope this part of this assessment has been enlightening and helpful. When you get a chance, take the next set of this assessment. Keep the print outs for each so, at the end of the series, you can trace your progress on your journey to Co-Create a Conscious Relationship. The Lord is His Pastor

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Gary Kurz “No, I don’t think you understand me Chief,” explained Mike in pigeon English, a blend of English and local dialect. “I am trying to tell you about Jesus and how much he loves you and your people, but you are talking about some real person.” Almost as quickly as the words left his mouth, Mike quickly retracted them; “I don’t mean that Jesus is not real, but that you are talking about someone who you met in person and you can’t meet Jesus in person.” Mike’s voice trailed off as he realized he had muffed it again. That wasn’t what he wanted to say either. Of course Jesus is a real person. Of course you can meet him. He knew what he wanted to say, but this language barrier was proving to be more of a problem than he had anticipated. Why had he volunteered to come here anyway? Surely the tribe could do without their missionary pastor while he was on a few months furlough. He and the other Bible College students thought they would be having fun in the field during summer vacation. Arguing with a tribal Chief who always gets his way was not his idea of fun. But he was deep into it now. Focusing, he tried again. “My friend, I am trying to tell you about the one true God. He lives in a place up there,” he said pointing upward, “and he hasn’t been here in a long, long time. You simply could not have met him in person.” Obviously frustrated himself, the chief retorted in his own blend of English and local language “How God help me if no come village”? Before Mike could answer, the Chief added “Him live here many days. Him give food, teach people, heal sick. Him love my people. Him Lord”. “No, no Chief, you don’t understand” Mike cried, “whoever you are talking about is not Jesus. Jesus left this world. He is not here. But he promised he will come back one day”. The Chief, with great enthusiasm responded “Ah yes, now you see Chief’s point. Jesus come here. Him do all you say. Him leave like you say. But him promise to come back.” Exasperated, Mike said mockingly, “Okay chief, when? When will he come back?” Certain he had finally prevailed; Mike folded his arms and leaned back on his stool with a grin. But the Chief’s response quickly erased the grin and almost caused Mike to fall off the stool; “two days Jesus come.” Not knowing how to respond, Mike decided to leave the conversation there and wait for two days to pass. “Then”, he thought to himself, “the Chief will see I was right.” It was barely dawn when the young native shook Mike from sleep “Come, come; Chief say you come? Him say Jesus here.” Half asleep and half numbed by the startling, unexpected news, Mike hurriedly dressed and ran as fast as his feet could take him to the main camp. His mind raced ahead of his feet as he wondered what on earth this news could mean. As he came into the camp, he saw a large group of villagers crowded around the meeting arena. As he pushed his way past the outer ring of the crowd, he saw a tall man towering above the people. Several were patting him on the back. Others were hugging him in tears of joy. Mike couldn’t quite make out who the man was until he was almost upon him, but when he did finally recognize him, Mike stopped dead in his tracks. There in front of him was the Missionary Pastor. Mike had forgotten that the Pastor’s furlough was almost over and that this was the day he was to return. Immediately, Mike understood. While he had been right, it was a hollow victory as the Chief’s position had been more accurate and insightful. The Missionary Pastor had set such a perfect Christian example that the people had mistaken him for the very Savior he was telling them about. He had so personified the attributes of Jesus in his service to the villagers that when he spoke about the Lord they could not make a distinction and naturally assumed he was speaking of himself. No doubt the Pastor would correct this misconception when the time was right. Sometimes the only Jesus people will ever see is us. How to Grow Organic Tomatoes

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By Laura Fox The most popular garden vegetable is the tomato. Varieties are available in a wide range of sizes, colors and shapes. Each having its own flavor and use. Tomatoes can be propagated by seeds or clippings. They will germinate between 60F and 95F with optimum conditions between 75F and 90F. At 75F they will generally sprout in about 1 week. If you don’t grow your own seedlings and must buy transplants make sure you choose sturdy plants. The greener and shorter the plant the better, as they will grow best when transplanted. You should avoid plants that are tall and leggy, and those that have flowers on them already. If you do grow your own seedlings a grow lamp for supplemental light is a good idea. Even if you have a window that faces to the south the light the plants receive is not sufficient. Seedlings should be started indoors 6-8 weeks before transplanting them outside. The seeds should be planted 1/8 inch deep in a sterile seed starting mix in either cells or flats. After germination the seedlings grow best at 70F. Don’t be in too much of a hurry to transplant you seedlings outdoors if the soil or weather is cold as the temperature can shock the plants. Hot caps and other protection can help the plants early in the season. All covers must be removed if the temperatures exceed 85F. Tomatoes do better if they are planted deeper than the original containers they were started in. They should be set in the ground just below the lowest leaf, allowing the plant to obtain a stronger root system. Tomatoes need a constant supply of moisture, and if you don’t receive at least one inch of rain per week, supplemental watering is necessary. Mulching will also help retain water, and drip irrigation is a good way to supple water without wasting it. If you plan on staking your tomatoes do it right after you transplant your seedlings. If you wait too long the plant will have developed a mature root system, and the stakes may damage them. Tomato cages are an alternative to tomato stakes, but as these have short spikes as well it is best to set these up as early as possible. The advantage of a tomato cage is the fact that you don’t have to constantly tie up your growing plant to the stake. Once the plants begin to grow they need to be pruned. Snap off “suckers” so that there are one or two vigorous stems. This should be done when they are about 2 to 3 inches long. If you are staking your tomatoes you should tie the stems to the stake with soft string. Form a figure-8 with the stake in one loop and the stem in the other. This will give the stem room to grow and prevent constriction. You should start tying about 10 to 12 inches above the ground and continue as the plant grows. Avoid fertilizing your tomatoes with too much Nitrogen as this will lead to excessive foliage growth and not enough fruit production. Heavy rainfall or inconsistent temperatures also lead to poor fruit growth. Unfortunately we cannot control mother nature. For most soils, you can side dress a 5-10-5 fertilizer and work it into the top inch of soil. You should start fertilizing when the fruits are about 1 inch in diameter and repeat fertilizing again when the harvest begins. The Millennial Defined

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

By Laura Thomas The word millennium is Latin for a thousand years. Scriptures refer to a one-thousand year period, specifically spoken of in Revelation 20. According to this chapter, Satan is bound during the one thousand year reign of Christ and is not released until the end of this period. Once released, he will lead nations into a final rebellion against God. God will of course defeat this coalition and a final judgment will take place. The millennium was believed by the early church to be a literal 1,000 years in accordance to the time period we recognize today. During Augustine (A.D. 400), the literal view became abandoned for the most part, in favor of spiritual Old Testament prophesies. The Roman Catholic Church and its scholars today are not permitted in the belief of the Millennium Period. They look at it as the Jewish Apocalyptic Movement. A renewed interest in prophecy occurred during the Nineteenth Century which led a great revival of the early churchs view. Today, Christians generally take one of three positions. The first view Amillinialism. This group takes the one thousand years as symbolizing Christs present rule from Heaven. In other words, there is no thousand years. They believe in only a general resurrection and a general Judgment. Therefore this view does not believe Satan is bound during the thousand year period nor a literal thousand year future reign of Christ. The second view, known as Post-Millennial, is beginning to fade in todays society. This group believes the thousand years represent the spiritual victory of the Gospel over the forces of evil. They feel the growth of the gospel will cause the world to get better and better until the present order blends into a millennium period of righteousness. Their belief is that Christ will return to Earth once the spiritual battle has been won, following will be the final judgment and then eternal order. The third view is known as the Pre-Millennial View. Pre-Millennialists believe Christ will return to the earth and set up His kingdom to reign here for a literal one thousand years. There is two broad types within this view, Dispensation pre-millennialism and Historic pre-millennialism. In the Dispensational view, the believer takes the thousand years to be a literal both to fact and number. The millennium is seen to follow the seven year tribulation period known as the Great Tribulation. Directly before this tribulation occurs Christ raptures his church and at his second return bring back with him the saints to reign the earth. During this time Satan is bound to a literal bottomless pit and for a literal one thousand years. This view of future events also incorporates much of the Old testament prophecy to be fulfilled during the millennium period. The second view, Historical pre-millennialism holds to a literal future reign of Christ, during which Satan is bound for a thousand year period. Many who holds this view sees the thousand years as a symbolism of a number and possibly may not be an actual one thousand years as we know time today. This view also sees the rapture to occur during the middle of the tribulation period with a single return of Christ, unlike Dispensational which sees Christs second coming set into two phases. The Millennium is an era in the worlds future. During the period of this Kingdom Age, the Lord Jesus receives from God the rule and government of the earth. He will rule this period unlike other ages and deal with mankind in a special way. It is said in scripture He will rule the world with a Rod of Iron. This time period has several descriptive titles, each shining light on the understanding of the scope and characteristics of this time period in relation to man and God. The Kingdom Reign is looked at as the long expected day of the Messiah. This will be a day of righteousness and peace. During this time period, the earth will not know of any wars. Jerusalem will be rebuilt and adored as the center of the earth. Christ will rule a universal law with worship and blessing. There are several major features of the Millennium. First and foremost, all who enter into the Millennium will be saved and relate to Christs physical presence. Children will enter the Millennium without judgment, and during the Millennium, many others will be born. Because of Christs presence, the full knowledge of the Gospel will be known by all. The adults, both Gentile and Israelite entering into the Millennium will be indwelled by the Holy Spirit. A part of the blessing of the new Covenant is the promise for the saved that God will speak to their hearts. There will not be any hindrance of preaching Gods word during this time. One wonderful feature of this kingdom will be the temple described in great detail in the book of Ezekiel. Worship and praise and memorializing will be of Christ, to include religious Holidays will be observed during the Millennium. (Ezek 40-48) (46:1-15; Zech 14:16) Of course, righteousness and justice will prevail during this period, as well as health and prosperity. With complete knowledge of God and total blessings available, man will find his problem is his own heart and not the lack of any given item from God. Once God shows this great revelation proof to man by allowing Satan to be loosened for a short season at the end of the Millennium, eternity and glory shall be forever more. For God has a purpose and plan to show man his own nature, and the Millennium is the final direction in which God shares His plan with man. Increased, Irritating, Invasive, Inconsiderate, Insensitive, Interruptions of Cell Phone Users

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Glenn_Ebersole]Glenn Ebersole My personal experiences the past few weeks have provided up close and personal confirmation of people becoming more and more rude with their cell phones. And the personal observations are backed up by many polls, which indicate such findings as: cell phone rudeness is the #1 complaint of diners (Zagat Restaurant Survey); the most abhorred uses of cell phones (according to USA Today) are over dinner (86%), in a meeting (88%), in a movie (96%) and at a funeral (98%); and the worst cell phone habit is unnecessarily loud conversations in public places (Spovate market research). What an embarrassing commentary this is! Please permit me to share my personal experiences in the last couple weeks that exemplify the above: 1. While meeting with a client for dinner, a business executive at the next table in this fine dining restaurant took a cell phone call and held a conversation without leaving his table. He spoke in a loud voice and we could not help but hear his conversation. 2. At a well attended professional association leadership conference and during the keynote speakers remarks, a bank executive attending the conference took a cell phone call in the middle of the speakers remarks and then proceeded to talk to the caller without leaving his seat. 3. During the viewing of the film, Good Night & Good Luck at one of our local movie theaters, a patrons cell phone went off with an irritating ring tone and the patron took the call and talked loudly during the film, until he was asked to leave. 4. At the memorial service of a dear friend & business associate, someones cell phone rang loudly with a distinctive ring tone during the ministers remarks about the life of my friend. And sad to say, I could list even more examples within the same time frame. Whatever happened to common sense and common courtesy? Why do we witness this rudeness, bad manners and selfish behavior all around us today? In another article I wrote, I raised the question of Do we control our email or does our email control us? It seems a valid corollary question for this article is Do we control our cell phones or do they control us? It is shameful to admit I believe the latter is true. So you ask me what can be done to try to reverse the rudeness of our cell phone environment? Here are my suggestions for some simple guidelines for cell phone etiquette. 1. Turn off your cell phone when you enter movie theaters, churches, museums, libraries, art galleries, live theatre, concert halls and other public places. Or if you have some valid compelling need to have your sell phone there, please turn your cell phone on vibrate and if called, please leave the room to take the call. 2. Keep any public conversations brief and arrange to get back to the caller when you are not in a public place. 3. Use common sense and turn off your cell phone before a board or other business meeting or a job interview. 4. Turn off your cell phone when you are at someone elses home or office. 5. Do not set a ringer to play some favorite ring tone, that although you may love to hear, others will find it irritating. 6. Use your normal speaking volume on your cell phone. 7. Control your cell phone instead of allowing your cell phone to control you. 8. Do not use your cell phone to try to impress others, because using a cell phone is not really that impressive any more. 9. Show respect for others you are with and do not take cell phone calls while on business or social engagements. 10. Follow airline rules for cell phones whenever traveling by air. How Do Boundaries Work?

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

By Dr. Jackie Black We learn to set boundaries to protect two different parts of Self: Boundaries for our Outside Self, which protect our body and control distance and touch Boundaries for our Inside Self, which act as filters or blocks to protect our thinking, feeling and behavior Boundaries that protect our Outside Self can be violated by such actions as: Touching or standing too close without permission Intruding on a person’s privacy; for instance, walking into the bathroom or bedroom without knocking, or getting into another’s personal possessions without permission Boundaries that protect our Inside Self can be violated by such actions as: Yelling, screaming, name calling, ridiculing, lying, patronizing and sarcasm Negative control Unrealistic expectations Demanding one’s own way or point of view as the only choice HOW ARE BOUNDARIES SET? Let me say first, setting boundaries is not disrespectful, bad or wrong. In fact, personal boundaries are set by people who are emotionally healthy. Educate people in your life about your boundaries. Calmly and respectfully inform them about how they can and cannot behave around you. Let people know what you want and don’t want, what you like and dont like. Let people know what your limits are. This actually gives people in your life the security of knowing your relationship guidelines and eliminates their fears about how they should behave with you. Just a note to point out that the failure or inability to set boundaries may result in several unfortunate circumstances: Inability or unwillingness to set limits results in no protection for yourself Building walls to protect yourself actually blocks closeness and prevents loving and unloving interactions Confusion or ambivalence about setting boundaries results in partial protection Building walls or inadequate boundaries blocks all interactions and results in no protection A boundary is not a barrier. Setting boundaries raises your sense of self-worth and self-esteem, because you are sending yourself the message that you are worthy of care. Be a person who knows that you have a right to control distance, touching and other physical contact with people, and they have the same right with you. You have a right to control your response to what others say, do, or expect of you, and they have the same right. You think your own thoughts and make your own choices. You must choose to do or not to do that which is in your own best interest or in response to your experiences. Others have the same right. If you offend or affront another person, you are responsible for the impact of your action and should make amends. If someone offends or affronts you, s/he is responsible for the impact of his or her action and should make amends. Setting and maintaining your own boundaries and honoring the boundaries of others are skills that can be learned. It takes mindfulness, intention and practice. Be patient with yourself as you learn and practice these important and valuable skills. It is worth it; And so are you! Only You can make it happen!
