Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Jennifer Marah As a Professional Speaker, you know Word of Mouth travels fast; keeping in touch with your prospects and previous clients are important. Here are ten ways to use some of the hundreds of contacts to achieve a successful and lasting working relationship with your clients. Thank You / Holiday Cards Letting clients know that you appreciate their business is essential in building a relationship. A wise woman that I know once told me, Be the customer. People who know that you know you care about your business relationships are more willing to refer you. So leave a great first impression, then make a lasting second, third and fourth. References As a speaker, sometimes companies will ask for references for those individuals willing to talk with them about the enlightening seminar you presented to them. Make sure to have those contacts available when you need them, and make sure you contact them regularly to maintain that successful relationship. Testimonials Do you need testimonials for your website or brochures? This is an easy way to use your client information with permission for everyone to see! Targeted Marketing Is there something specific that you had in mind for a particular customer after speaking with them? A seminar or a book you had written that you believe they might benefit from? Make sure they know about it. Sending this information in a personalized letter is a great way to gain a sale. They will know you were involved and listening. Product / Services Releases Take your list from previous book sales or contacts about articles, and use those contacts to send a targeted release to those individuals or companies so they know your new book or service is available. If they loved it before, chances are they will love it again. How many times have you purchased a book or a service just because of the name attached? Ezine or Newsletter Mailings Including your clients on hard copy newsletter mailings is a great way to highlight your work and share your pebbles of information with a sea full of fish. According to spammer guidelines, you can use your current customers and inquires to build your mailing list for Ezines. Remember when sending an Ezine to have an opt-out option so individuals who are not interested can remove themselves from your list. Direct Mail Marketing Sending out a new mass marketing? Make sure to include the contacts you have had consistent contact with before to show them your new look, and remind them of your presence. Needs you may need one day Its always good to keep in contact with clients who may offer services you may one day need. That group of Accountants that you spoke with may one day be needed at tax time! New & Newer Contacts That hot prospect or continual business contact left her company. That might hurt for some businesses, but with speaking, you now have the New and newer contacts! That individuals new company may need a speaker on Leadership one day and eventually so will the old. Building a relationship with the individual that is hired to replace the fist contact is critical to keeping that working relationship. Hosting a Seminar When deciding to host your own seminars, you will need several things. A great location, good content, handouts and yes, attendees! So use those contacts to invite people. The more people that attend, the more money you make! Conclusion Needless to say, your contacts are imperative to the growth of your business. If youre new to the speaking business, dont fret! Your contact list will soon grow to sometimes what may seem like uncontrollable proportions. Warning: Objects Within Your Browser Window Are Smaller Than They Appear!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Martin Lemieux Is your internet window showing objects (companies) that seem larger than they appear? I think so. The Internet not only has allowed us to market to the world but it also has allowed many companies to hide their true nature and size. Some Consumers Want To Work With Large Companies: Many companies out there try to make themselves seem larger than they appear and sometimes they do this on purpose. There are consumers out there that feel more comfortable going with established companies that have a team of employees and (apparently) have more responsibilities to their employees and clients. Other Consumers Would Rather Work With Smaller Companies: Then there are other consumers out there that can’t stand working with big companies and would rather work with the little guys who treat every customer like they’re family. The problem lies with the misconception about how large or how small your company really is. See, if you give an appearance online that you’re a massive company when you’re not, this might actually backfire on you once people call for your products or services. People don’t like to be misled in any way, shape, or form. Smartads has 5 people involved with us on a daily basis. We are not a team of 1 but at the same time, we aren’t a monster company either. Our contact pages reflect this as well. Do You Have 10 Email Accounts Online That All Go To One? It’s when you go through a companies contact page and they have an entire directory of emails listed for different departments that ALL, and I mean all go to the same person. It would look something like this…. For customer support email: support@bogussite.dumb For technical support email: techies@bogussite.dumb For advertising email: ads@youknowwhat.com For general inquiries, don’t even bother! See where I am going with this? I can understand if you like to separate your email accounts because of the volume coming in but, ironically, if you list over 5 “live” email accounts on your contact page, I’ll bet you’re getting a ton of spam as well! Exploit Your Size To Appeal To The Right Clients: Don’t try to hide your companys size just because you’re a small business enterprise; exploit it to those who are looking to do business with specifically smaller companies. I can understand if you have the need to separate your email accounts, try having an online form that responds to a drop down menu which in turn sends the emails to different accounts on it’s own. If you don’t like the fact that your business is a one-man band, hire someone to answer your calls for you. In fact, try out someone at home (family or roommate). They are a lot cheaper anyway. At least you can free up some time, and seem more professional from a clients point of view. The whole Point Is This… Just because we can hide behind our computer’s to attract better, larger fish, it doesn’t really mean we actually need to. You might hurt your business more if you try to “act as if” or promise to make something work which you know you don’t have the resources for. Raise Your Prices To Make More Money, Don’t Raise Your Curb Appeal: You don’t need to look big in order to attract more money, sometimes the simpler answer works better. Try raising your prices to see whether or not this will actually deter consumers (Yes, there is a risk) but, if you try to appear larger than you actually are, you’re already risking a great deal. Be true to your business and you will attract clients that are true to you. “Thoughts are things” really takes affect online because consumers can’t relate on an emotional level, they can only compute what they read and what they see. If your website gives consumers a false statement, your business will not profit from this method of promotion, but will only be hindered from your mistakes. How to Remove Crayon From Carpet and Walls

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Brenda H. Murphy Crayons are a wonderful tool for little ones to express their creativity, and you’ll proudly display their efforts on your refrigerator for years. But accidental artwork on other surfaces around the home are not things you want hanging around. If you have crayon mashed into the carpet, you can’t remove it quite the same way as wax, which is a mistake that many people have made. You should first scrape off all the crayon you can, either with a spoon or dull side of a blade like a butter knife. A thin piece of cardboard such as part of a cereal box will come in handy. Cut a section and place it behind the clump/spot where the crayon is, then carefully spray the crayon mark with WD-40 oil, making sure to use the “needle nozzle” tube so the oil doesn’t get on more than it needs to. Next, take a small, stiff bristle brush and work upwards in the nap, while laying the crayon mark on the cardboard. Wipe with paper towels. Spray on more WD-40, work in some dish detergent with the brush, then wipe off with a damp sponge. Move your cardboard around, so that you’re always working against a clean section. If the stain remains, repeat the last oil and soap treatment, then wash the section of carpet with a Shop Vac or other cleaner. Did someone use the living room wall for their canvas? Just take the same can of WD-40 (a car part lubricant) and spray it on the marks, then wipe off with a soft cloth. Treat again if a stain remains, then wash the wall with warm water and dish detergent. Tips For Your Home Gardens

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Mary Hanna Home gardens can be hard work but for many it is a great hobby that gives you many rewards. Gardening is the most popular hobby in this country. It helps you to relax and many say it is very therapeutic. Look at it this way, you are outside in the fresh air and you are working on a project that helps to relieve stress and worry. It is also a great way to work out without having to get in your car and go to the gym. Think of the hours of enjoyment you will get when your hard work turns into gorgeous, lush gardens. Along with the enormous enjoyment you will get from your garden, you will also reap the harvest of any fruit trees and enjoy that too. There are a few garden tips that you should follow that will reward you with a beautiful home garden for you and your friends to enjoy. There are some home gardening tips to keep in mind when shopping for new trees or shrubs. Usually, when you purchase and plant trees and shrubs they are very small. The gardener comes home and plants under a window or near the house. These plants will start to grow and can cause some tricky problems. This is a mistake to avoid. As the plants grow, so do their root systems. If planted to close to the house they could do harm to your foundation, sewer or water lines. Not only can they cause damage to these things but then it will be necessary to pay to have the tree or shrub removed. When planting shrubs around your house they may grow tall enough to block out sunlight or be a detriment to your landscaping scheme. To avoid this trouble in your home garden, find out exactly how tall and wide the shrubs and trees will be at maturity, a very important tip. Remember, never plant a tree too close to your house. The roots could cause very costly damages and you would have to have the tree taken out. To encourage new spring growth, prune your shrubs in the fall to allow air flow. Until the shrub or tree is established you must water them liberally. Proper watering of your trees or shrubs is essential if you want them to survive and in some cases to keep the guarantee valid. Lawn sprinkler irrigation is generally inadequate for watering these new plants. Trees and shrubs must have a deeper, soaking watering of the root ball. Moist but not “sloppy wet” is the rule. The recommended watering schedule when your trees and shrubs are first planted is as follows: Days 1-30 - Everyday Days 31 60 Every other day Days 61 & following At least twice per week Plants that you have watered well survive far better during the cold months than plants starting winter without enough water. Depending on your zone, it is best to plant trees and shrubs in the fall, never in the summer. Take care of your home gardens and you will have years of enjoyment adding texture and beauty to your home and yard. Happy Gardening! Copyright Mary Hanna, All Rights Reserved. All About Gardening Tools

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Peter Finch God made rainy days, so gardeners could get the housework done - Gardening can be that addictive and more so if you have the right tools! Selecting the right gardening tools is also important when taking up a gardening project. Opt for tools that are neither too heavy nor too light. Heavy equipments are difficult to use and quite tiresome while lighter ones are poorly made. Good gardening tools have handles made of high quality wood like ash. Here are some popular gardening tools - - Garden rake helps to soothe the soil after it is tilled. This tool is helpful in finishing work when making planting beds or a new lawn. - Cultivators help in cutting the hard compacted soil. Some of them have broader edges while others have narrow ones. These are useful in making the annual beds for vegetable gardens. - Edger is another gardening tool that helps the flower gardens and shrubs maintain their shape. Gardens lose their crisp lines over time when grass intrudes in the garden. Using the edger will prevent grass roots taking a firm hold in planting beds. - Pitchfork is a tool used for aerating compacted soil and preparing garden beds. They are also used for dividing grasses and also to spread mulch in spring. - Reel Mowers are used to cut grass. They give a cleaner cut as compared to other tools. They do not use gas and hence there is no pollution with reel mowers. These are great for small lawns. It is a lightweight and easy to use tool. - Hand Pruners are gardening tools used for cutting branches. They give cleaner and precise cuts. They have bypass blades that help in cutting the branches neatly. - Loppers are just like pruners but are provided with long handles and the ability to cut branches of around 2 inches thickness. - Compact Pruning Saw is a tool useful for cutting branches. It is small enough to fit into the middle of a shrub to cut the branch. Gardening tools are essential for maintaining your garden but it is not really necessary to spend a lot on buying garden tools. You need not have all the latest tools to give your garden that perfect look. You can just buy some basic tools to start with. With minimum tools, you too can make your garden attractive. One of the basic gardening tools is a spading fork. This helps to dig down the soil and break the ground. This is very essential since at some point or the other you will need to open and improve the soil. Hoe is a gardening tool useful for weeding and cultivating the soil. This is done to allow the penetration of nutrients and water into the soil. For larger digging projects you will also require a round ended shovel. A watering can is also one of the important gardening tools. It has long nozzles and allows water to flow gently. A good bow rake is essential to level the soil and also for removing large clods of earth or rocks from the soil. Having a pair of garden shears known as clippers are essential for cutting, shaping and removing foliage or branches. Give your garden that perfect look just by using the right gardening tools without spending money on expensive professional gardeners! Setting Up a Greenhouse

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By David Beart If you are a gardener who doesnt want your level of success to be determined by the weather, setting up greenhouses may be your solution. Not only will your crops not be subject to damage from the weather, you can actually control the climate in a greenhouse. Having the ability to manage the environment in your garden can make it possible for you to cultivate plants that dont normally grow in your climate. By controlling the conditions, you can even produce out of season. This is really an avid gardeners fantasy. Greenhouses unlock the barriers to gardening by making it viable to grow anything, anytime, no matter where you live. There are several things that you need to know when planning on setting up greenhouses. Taking care to plan will increase your potential while saving you money. It requires a little research, lots of thought and that loathed process of budgeting, but all in all, it is lots of fun, especially when the planning is done and you can make your ambition of being a phenomenal gardener a reality. There are five things to be considered in the planning process: Different types of greenhouses Greenhouse accessories Needs assessment Location Budget After building the knowledge, determining your needs, selecting a location, and setting your budget, you will be ready to devise a plan and put it into action! Types of greenhouses Building your knowledge concerning the different types of greenhouses will make the process so much easier. There are various different types including different sizes, shapes and building materials. Whether you are planning for a huge garden, a small garden, or an herb box, there are greenhouses available for you. Hobby gardening to commercial gardening can be accommodated. Greenhouses are available in several sizes. They range from a window box to a full-size building. You can select an attached greenhouse (attached to your house or another building), or a free-standing greenhouse. There are even portable greenhouses, or hobby greenhouses, that can easily fit on your porch. A lean-to shape is common with attached greenhouses, although an even-span can be attached too. A window-mounted greenhouse is a small, attached greenhouse. Free-standing greenhouses can take any shape and size. What is more to important to some than shape or size is the building materials used in the construction of a greenhouse. The materials used will determine the cost, the durability and the level of maintenance that will be required to keep the greenhouse in good shape. Some materials will require a permanent foundation; while some that are intended to be portable, wont require a permanent foundation. The frame of a free-standing greenhouse can be made of wood or pipe with choices of different grades of wood, plastic, aluminum, or galvanized steel pipe. The type of framing material may be dependent on your choice of coverings. For coverings you may choose tempered glass, fiberglass or plastic film. In selecting the materials, you should consider the pros and cons of each as well as the cost, maintenance requirement and durability. If you are building the greenhouse yourself, you should check with your local building inspector to find out about recommendations for materials in your area and whether or not a building permit is required. Greenhouse accessories It is best to become familiar with greenhouse accessories before you select your greenhouses or develop your budget. In order for your greenhouse to work, there are some accessories that you will definitely need. Other accessories are for convenience. One of the most important accessories to consider is watering devices, because plumbing may be required. Plumbing can really cut into your budget. So, it is a good idea to check out the options for watering your plants inside your greenhouse. Of course, you can carry water and hand-water your plants if you have the time, but there are watering devices that will automatically water as instructed. The next most significant knowledge to build is about climate and light control equipment. This includes equipment that will help you to control the environment in your greenhouse. Temperature control equipment such as heating systems and solar panels will allow you to control the heat, while evaporative coolers, humidification devices and shade cloths can help to cool and humidify the area. Ventilation and air circulation equipment may be necessary too. Artificial lighting can be used to compensate for sunlight if the greenhouse doesnt get enough sunlight. Control equipment really adds potential to your greenhouse. It can actually create an environment that best suits your garden, regardless of your climate or the weather. Control equipment can be automated, where it takes care of itself, or it can be manually implemented as needed. Of course you will need planters, pots or containers, unless you plant right in the ground. Plant stands and shelves will allow you to plant more in less space. You will also have to have the basic gardening supplies including hand tools. These are a few of the necessary greenhouse accessories. In your research, you will become familiar with lots of accessories that make gardening in a greenhouse a whole lot simpler and more enjoyable. Assessing your needs It is very important that you assess your needs. Otherwise, you will likely end up getting something that doesnt meet your needs. When that happens, you will end up spending loads of money to revamp your plan after you find out that greenhouses you have selected arent sufficient. After you have done all of the research on types of greenhouses and greenhouse accessories, you will know what is available. You will probably know what you want, but you need to make sure that it will meet your needs. Now is the time to decide if you want a large greenhouse, or maybe more than one small greenhouse. It all depends on what you are planting and the best environment for the plants. For example, if you are planting plants that grow best in dry environment along with plants that require humidity, it will be best to have two greenhouses so that you have the ability to control environment appropriately. Decide what you are going to plant and do the research to determine the best growing conditions for the plants. This will help to establish what you need in terms of greenhouses and accessories for controlling the environment. Selecting a location Location of the greenhouse will dictate what gardening accessories are needed in regard to lighting control. Some plants dont require a lot of light, while some require sunlight for the whole day. Positioning your greenhouse will determine whether or not you need artificial lighting. Choose a location where the greenhouse gets sunlight all day if you can. If you cant, be sure to plan for artificial lighting to compensate for shady hours in the day. Budgeting Budgeting is usually the first thing you do when planning a project. You probably had some idea of how much money you could spend on your greenhouse project, but after doing all the research, you are likely to find that you need more money to get exactly what you want. Now is the time to separate your wants from your needs. This may include formulating two budgets, one for now and one for later. For now, take your current budget and plan to purchase the things that you need to get your greenhouse going. Your budget may decide whether you will buy prefabricated greenhouses, have your greenhouses built, or built them yourself. It may decide what accessories you can get now, and what conveniences you will have to put off until later. Later, you can always add-on or buy additional accessories to enhance your gardening experience. Be sure to put your greenhouse plans in writing including drawings of what your long-term plan includes. This will help you or your contractor to remember what you are shooting for throughout the project. With good written plans, you wont accidentally place things where they will have to moved or torn down to expand your greenhouse. Of course, things can be moved, but moving them can be expensive and can jeopardize the strength and durability of the materials. Planning before you start to build greenhouses is vital. It can save you lots of money and make budgeting so much easier. It can actually set long-term plans to create the perfect gardening atmosphere, one that you will be proud of and enjoy working in. Every gardener has a dream. Make the vision a goal, and youll definitely realize it. Making the gardeners dream come true is promising with a little research, a lot of planning, patience, and hard work. It may not be something that you can have tomorrow, but you can start small and build-up over time until you have the garden that you never imagined possible. If you have done a good job of planning, the future wont include wasting your money by tearing down your insufficient greenhouse. Your greenhouse will be an investment in your long-term gardening plans. David Beart is the owner of http://www.professorshouse.com. Zone Diet - A New Weight Loss System

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By David Chandler The Zone Diet works on the principle that 100,000 years ago, we were meat eaters, and our metabolism is designed to handle the demands of a meat-based diet. Madonna, Demi Moore, and Jennifer Aniston swear by the results of the Zone Diet, which was created by Barry Sears, PhD. The Zone Diet contains 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat and is known as the 40-30-30 plan. As the food industry evolved, more carbohydrates have been introduced into our daily diet, thus causing an imbalance in our metabolism to burn fat. The reason for our extra weight can also be attributed to the many grains and starches in our diet (pasta, rice, breads, and potatoes). The Zone Diet’s approach calls for a return to the diets of our ancestors where meat, fruits, and vegetables are the main dietary foods. The Zone Diet suggests that you need the right ratio of carbohydrates to proteins and fats in order to control the insulin in the bloodstream. Too much of the hormone (insulin) can increase fat storage and inflammation in the body (conditions that are associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease). Sears asserts that by using the Zone Diet, you are actually optimizing the body’s metabolic function. Through the regulation of blood sugar, you allow your body to burn excess body fat. Although you are not prohibited from any particular food group, it is best to avoid food with high fat and carbohydrates such as grains, starches, and pastas. The ideal sources of carbs are fruits and vegetables and for monounsaturated fats olive oil, almonds, and avocados are recommended. The Zone Diet claims to use food as a drug for overall good health, weight loss and prevention or management of heart disease and diabetes. Sears says that you can test to see whether you are ‘hormonally’ correct by eating following the Zone diet and see how you feel four hours later. To simplify the Zone Diet, fill one-third of a plate with low-fat protein, and then two-thirds with fruits and vegetables. Celebrities and some health experts say that the Zone’s recommendations do not stray far from the USDA’s (United States Dietary Association) dietary guidelines and therefore are advocates of the Zone Diet. Others argue that the Zone Diet has flawed ratios but Sears argues that the Zone diet is a low-glycemic-load diet that has adequate protein. A critic of the Zone diet such as the AHA (American Heart Association) classifies the Zone Diet as high protein and does not recommend the Zone Diet for weight loss. They contend that the Zone Diet has not been proven effective in the long term for weight loss. The AHA issued an official recommendation warning against diets like the Zone Diet. They believe that the Zone Diet is hazardous as it restricts the intake of essential vitamins and minerals present in certain foods. The AHA also contends that the protein ratio in the Zone diet is too high even if the minimal fat ratio is good. Robert H. Ecker M.D of the A.H.A. finds the Zone Diet’s theory on insulin flawed and argues that there is no scientific proof that the hormone insulin plays a big role in weight regulation. The Future Of Banking - Bank Online

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Jakob Jelling Chances are your bank is a virtual place. Since the invention of the Internet you can see your balances anywhere, at any time. Most banks think globally and have acted this way by creating secure portals to manage their account holders information stored in their databases. This information stored usually shows account balances, previous transactions, current balances, interest paid and electronic scans of their checks. Anywhere you can get to a computer, your bank account is right in your hands, usually in real-time. Online checking Some banks even provide a service where you can pay your bills online vis–vis a checking account or saving account. You can setup creditors accounts, addresses and account numbers to be printed out on each check shipped. There are even some banks that will electronically send the check directly to their account for a nominal fee. Most electronic banking can be free depending on the minimum account requirements are met. Otherwise, electronic banking can cost up to $10 per month for the convenience to send money and manage your account via the web. In our move towards a paperless society, banks have begun to stop shipping back cleared checks to their account holders. These cleared checks can be found on the Internet and printed out should they need access to these records. Some banks also will not ship their monthly statements as they too can be printed out on the web as well. Interest bearing accounts Some checking accounts, savings accounts and IRAs can also be managed via the Internet. Account holders can move money between accounts and add money to their savings accounts electronically without ever visiting a teller or the local branch. Convenience One of the greatest conveniences is being able to reconcile your accounts with the popular personal finance software such as MS Money and Quicken. Banks have ways to create files that can be imported into these software products so that balancing the account is done for them with little intervention. The web makes it very handy should you forget to record items into your register and will do it all for you with a couple clicks of the mouse. Postpartum Depression

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Steve Valentino Postpartum or postnatal depression is a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that occur in a mother after giving birth. Depression may occur in women at during the pregnancy or after the delivery of the child. Postpartum depression occurs after delivery because of the hormonal changes in a woman’s body. About 70-80% of woman experience this, and it may appear within days of delivery or within a year. During pregnancy, the levels of two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, rise greatly. In the first 24 hours after childbirth, these rapidly drop back to their normal non-pregnant levels. Researchers think that this fast change in hormone levels may trigger depression, just as smaller changes in hormones can affect a woman’s moods before the menstrual cycle. Also, drops in the levels of thyroid hormones which helps to regulate metabolism is responsible for prompting depression. The amount of blood in the body, the blood pressure, the immune system and metabolism all change after giving birth. These changes affect how one feels physically and emotionally, causing fatigue or mood swings. There is no exact cause known for depression after childbirth, but it’s likely that physical, emotional and lifestyle factors all play a role. Often, the depression is not recognized or treated, because some normal pregnancy changes cause similar symptoms and are happening at the same time. Tiredness, problems sleeping, stronger emotional reactions, and changes in body weight occur during and after pregnancy. But these symptoms may also be signs of depression. The major causes include a family history of depression or substance abuse, little support from family and friends, anxiety about the fetus, problems with a previous pregnancy or birth, marital or financial problems, young age of mother, feeling tiredness after delivery, broken sleep patterns, feeling less attractive, and doubting one’s ability to be a good mother. Sometimes, women think they have to be the perfect “super mom,” which can add stress. Having to stay home or indoors for longer periods of time and having less time to spend with one?s husband or partner and loved ones also results in depression. There is a difference between baby blues and postpartum depression. Baby blues can happen in the days right after childbirth and normally go away within a few days to a week, whereas postpartum depression can happen anytime within the first year after childbirth and needs to be treated by a doctor. Talk therapies and anti-depressant medicines are the best ways to overcome and avoid this depression. Taking a nap when the baby does, asking for help from family members and friends, and talking with other moms definitely helps. Keeping a diary to note down emotions and feelings also works as a vent.
