Is Your Present Lifestyle Clouding Over Your Social Life?

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

By Michael Douglas A recent study done in the United States of America by sociologists from the University of Arizona and Duke University shows that Americans have fewer close friends (than they had a decade ago) these days owing to a hectic lifestyle and stressing, back breaking office schedules. The study indicates that they are moving towards an increasingly isolated societal existence. The newest strategy several companies are following to boost sales is pretty innovative. They are offering free vacation packages, which coax consumers to give up what could possibly be their most elusive commodity, their official ‘Work’ time, and take a break. And this is no small task with today’s fast paced lifestyle where everyone seems to be caught up in that all important race to the finish line, leaving them with no personal life. Though the world may have become a smaller place with the advancements in technology, ironically, human contact been people seems to have dwindled. So while we chat with our associates across the globe, we might not even know our neighbours. On an average most of us spend 30 per cent of our day travelling to and from work. This is a choice that each one of us makes in terms of priorities. Earlier, we were satisfied with earning a certain amount of money. Today, we want more of everything - more money, a bigger house, a better job and so on. The job market too has become extremely competitive. People are paid fantastic salaries and employers expect them to earn it. The consequences are enormous, and quite disastrous. Not taking time out from work to unwind affects work in the long run, leads to unfinished deadlines. Sometimes, one even loses the motivation to work at all. It also affects one’s relationship with closed ones. It also leads to distress which can then lead to either sadness or aggression, or even depression. It could lead to violence too. So what is the solution if any? I believe that organising time is extremely crucial: “You might later realise that you have wasted the best years of your life running from home to office and vice versa. I suggest prioritisation and goal setting - long as well as short term, both at home and at the work place. See what you need to do everyday and evaluate what you did at the end of the day, week and month. Leave some space for unexpected commitments which might crop up. And it helps if you have an assertive personality. Learn when to say no. If you say yes to everyone from your boss to your friends, to working overtime and catching the latest movie at the same breath, you will end up being overburdened and resentful. One should start focusing on the present and letting go of past grudges or future worries. Expressing your feelings is also important. Be spontaneous. Whenever you get a bit of time, utilise it positively. Either meet up with friends or do something you enjoy doing alone. Lastly, take care of your mental and physical health, which will enable you to make optimum use of your time. Michael Douglas has some special interest in writing articles that deals with human values and human present needs. By the way, he owns a website which focusses on human relationships where he offers relationship advice and tips on common marriage problems to help you create better and successful relationships. Also, you would love to enjoy reading his favourite write-ups and articles on love and relationship. Abdominoplasty Primer: What is a Tummy Tuck?

Friday, August 10th, 2007

By Arturo Ronzon Abdominoplasty is more commonly known as a tummy tuck, and is a serious surgical procedure. Essentially what a tummy tuck is, is the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen as well as a tightening of the abdominal wall muscles. The appearance of a protruding abdomen can be dramatically reduced by a tummy tuck procedure. Getting a tummy tuck done will leave a permanent scar on your body, which can extend from hip to hip but will sometimes be smaller. It is important to know everything you can about the procedure before considering any surgery, as there is no surgery that comes without risks. The following is a run down of what you need to know and consider before deciding whether or not to undergo surgery for a tummy tuck. The purpose of a tummy tuck is to remove large fat deposits and loose abdominal skin that will not respond to normal diet and exercise regimens. Many women who have had multiple pregnancies and in doing so, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point of returning to normal, can make use of the tummy tuck procedure to return their tummies to their original shape. Patients who intend to lose weight, or gain weight (as though pregnancy or otherwise) should not go through with the procedure right away. Before you decide to have surgery, consider all of your options carefully and discuss your expectations with your surgeon to ensure that a tummy tuck is the right procedure for you. The most important thing to be aware of, is that all surgery carries uncertainly and risk in some form. Thousands of tummy tucks are performed successfully every year, but there are always risks associated with surgeries, and there are specific complications that are associated with the tummy tuck procedure. There is a risk of post operative complications, like infection and blood clots. These complications are rare, but possible so they should be considered thoroughly. A complete tummy tuck generally lasts between two and five hours, but it depends on the extent of the work that is required for each individual body. Partial tummy tucks or mini tummy tucks tend to take only around an hour or two. First, the surgeon makes a long incision from hipbone to hipbone, then a second incision in order to free the navel from the surrounding tissue. The incision is much shorter with a mini tummy tuck. Next, the surgeon will separate your skin from the abdominal wall, lifting a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles along your abdomen. These muscles are pulled closer together in order to tighten them, and they are stitched into the new position to provide a narrower waistline and a firmer abdominal wall. Next, the skin flap is stretched down over the stomach, removing the extra skin. A new hole is cut for your navel which is then stitched into its place. The incisions are stitched and dressings are applied at the end, and a temporary tube is sometimes affixed in order to drain any excess fluid that may try to build up in the surgical site. For the first few days following the tummy tuck surgery, your abdomen will be swollen and you’re likely to be in a bit of pain or discomfort, which can be gradually controlled by medicine and which will slowly wane over time. You could be released within a few hours of the surgery, or they may keep you in the hospital for a few days depending on how your body reacts to the event. It could take as many as a few months to feel like your old self again following your tummy tuck. It is important to be in the best possible physical condition before the surgery if you want to bounce back quickly. Exercise will help you to heal better following the surgery, so consider adopting an exercise program in order to reduce swelling, tone muscles and lower the chance of blood clots. Why You Never Have To Pay Retail Prices For Anything - Ever Again

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

By Tukshad Engineer I step into my local mall, and into a leading top brand clothes store. I see a jumper I like and while feeling the soft material casually lift up the price tag - and I almost feint with disbelief. How much??? That’s more than I make in 2 days! I quickly stop caressing the fabric and head toward Big Als Unbranded Clothes Discount Centre for a sweater within my budget range (which unfortunately will no doubt look as if it were knitted by my 5 year old Niece.) Sounds familiar? Well it really need not be this way. It actually amazes me how many people do not use wholesalers and government auctions to save money on just about anything they could ever wish to purchase. It’s possible to get regular discounts of 50% and more on top brand items just by knowing WHERE to shop. Let us begin by looking at Government Auctions. While this article will focus on the USA and UK it’s worth noting that government auctions are held in many other countries too. A government auction is held to auction off various items (often at rock bottom prices) that the government has legal ownership of. The type of items auctioned by various government agencies include vehicles, electronics, real estate, computers, jewellery and a lot more. In the UK, the types of government agencies that will offer up bargain goods and properties include the police and C&E - there are also private liquidation’s due to corporate bankruptcies. Many hundreds of auctions are held yearly and there are scores of bargains to be had in most of them. It’s not unusual to pickup a brand new widescreen TV at 30 or top spec PCs and laptops from a mere 200. It’s possible to learn more here: http://www.global-ebooks.com/UKGovAuctions.htm In the USA there are also similar bargains to be had, and the government agencies often auction off cheap land and properties in addition to the usual range of electronics, vehicles and household goods. Just some of the bargains in recent times include assorted jewellery $600 in value being sold for just $20 and an actual house being sold at 50% below its market value. More information on government auctions in the USA is available here: http://www.global-ebooks.com/US_GOVERNMENT_AUCTIONS.htm So are there any catches? Surely not anyone can just turn up and help themselves to all the bargains that they can carry home? Well actually, that’s just the way it is. Anyone can attend, you just need to know where and these auctions take place. Not a lot of people realise it, but it’s also possible to pick up massive wholesale bargains, just by ordering goods from a good wholesaler. There is a lot of apprehension with a lot of people when it comes to buying from wholesalers - many people are afraid that they will get turned away, that wholesalers will only sell to huge retail stores with many thousands of dollars to spend. While some wholesalers do have minimum orders, many do not at all and will gladly accept orders from you and me. You can check out some really good wholesalers here: UK http://www.global-ebooks.com/UKWHOLESALEPAGES.htm USA http://www.global-ebooks.com/US_WHOLESALE_PAGES.htm So there you have it - a way to save a lot of money on just about anything that you want to buy. The best thing is that you can just as easily use this information to actually make money. How? eBay is the worlds biggest auction site by far, enjoying billions of page impressions per month (and this number is growing!). People will buy and sell almost anything on eBay, and some sellers have actually made selling on eBay their full time jobs. Many of them use the government and wholesale sources to buy stock cheap before reselling on eBay at good profit margins. Whether you’re looking to save money or make money on top brand goods, wholesalers and government auctions are the way forward. Find out a list of auctions and wholesalers that you can visit and then just DO IT! You may well be pleasantly surprised with what you come home with. Natural Mineral Cosmetics: Flawless Dusting

Monday, August 6th, 2007

By Sherry Frewerd The Product Virtually no allergy risk, natural mineral cosmetics allow skin to breath. Talc free, chemical free, and dye free natural cosmetics recommended by plastic surgeons and dermatologists, are created from powdered minerals. Their consistency and mineral content act together to calm the most sensitive skin. Over time mineral cosmetics actually improve your skin. Since your skin is allowed to breathe through the mineral foundation, no oily barrier preventing oxygen from reaching your skin, the texture and tone of your skin improve. Microscopic fibers fill up those tiny lines in your skin and give your complexion a natural healthy glow. The best part of natural cosmetics is their ability to add a youthful glow while protecting your skin from harmful solar rays. Consisting of mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, ultramarine, zinc oxide, mineral foundation is particularly well suited to use as a sunscreen. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are both used in high quality sun blocks. These cancer fighting sun-blocking agents are both in most mineral make up products. Mineral cosmetics are ideal for anyone suffering from acne or post surgical skin procedures. In most instances acne improves after extended periods of using mineral make up because titanium dioxide does not promote the growth of bacteria as some cosmetics may. Due to the dry formula of mineral cosmetics, ingredients such as talc, dye, and perfume are not added. Therefore mineral cosmetics offer a chemical free option to popular cosmetic choices. 100 percent natural cosmetics provide excellent coverage, staying power, and creaseless beauty all day long. Natural anti-drying agents help to seal in moisture and prevent clogged pores. Mineral cosmetics dusted on liberally with special high quality brushes fill tiny lines and hide blemishes, leaving a soft healthy glow and sun protections. Because they dont have to be reapplied during the day, they reduce stress and increase the happy factor in your life. The Application Foundation gives your face a flawless silky glow that reflects health with fine texture and uniform color. A little goes a long way. It is always best to start your make up application with clean fresh skin. If you choose to use moisturizer, it must be fully absorbed before applying mineral cosmetics. To conceal any flaws: Lightly brush mineral foundation over any areas where flaws exist. Light layers cover better than one heavy layer; so go lightly. Mineral foundation should be applied to dry skin, moisture will make it cake and appear uneven on your skin. Using a brush to apply the foundation in circular motions results in flawless coverage. Blusher or bronzing powder should be applied as a highlighting accent to your face and completed with a finishing powder to set your make up. Eye shadow can be applied either wet or dry, using a shadow brush, apply lightly and add more as needed. A bit of bronzer is an excellent eye shadow choice for daytime wear. Using a light touch and the right brushes will help you achieve that dewy glow of youth and good health. These products are inexpensive and long lasting, making them an excellent choice for everyday cosmetic needs. The Gentle Art of Poaching

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

By Michael Sheridan Delicate proteins like fish and eggs respond well to kind treatment, like being cooked in liquid kept just below boiling point. Poached, in other words. The principle is the same in every case - keep the liquid simmering; don’t let it boil; be patient. For eggs, it works like this: Put an inch of water in the bottom of a saut pan (which is a skillet with high sides) and bring it to the boil. Reduce to a simmer and add some salt and a tablespoon of vinegar, which helps to hold the egg white together. The liquid is simmering when the surface seems to quiver without any bubbles breaking. Now crack a very fresh egg into a saucer or similar shallow dish, and then slide it gently into the water. It will take about five minutes to cook. You can serve it straight away by lifting it out with a slotted spatula and resting it briefly on some kitchen towel to drain off excess water. You can also drop it into iced water to keep for later. Once again you’ve prepared something in advance which is there when you need it. You can reheat poached eggs, by the way. Just lower them into hot water for about half a minute. Fish If eggs, why not fish? No reason at all. You can poach fish in exactly the same way, using water, wine, stock or milk. Solid fish like cod respond best to this treatment, but any fish can be cooked in the same way. And now for the smart bit :0) If you pre-heat the poaching liquid, put the fish in a shallow tray, add the liquid and put the whole lot under a hot broiler, you will achieve a number of things; A slight ‘crust’ on top of the fishThe flesh will remain beautifully moistIt will cook through evenlyYou can remove the fish from under the broiler and keep it warm in the cooking liquid until you are ready to serve it. Now take the next step up in excellence - poached salmon or trout for lunch! First you’ll need something to cook it in. A fish kettle is ideal of course, but expensive for a dish you may not cook that often. I use a large, oval casserole dish that will also cook pot roasts, whole chickens and so on. Whole fish are easily poached in a bouillon made up of water (enough to cover the fish), some slices of onion, two or three peppercorns, a bay leaf and some vermouth. How much? How much do you like vermouth? About a wine glass full. Now bring all this to the boil on top of the stove, turn off the heat, slide the cleaned fish into the hot liquid, cover and leave overnight. In the morning it will be perfectly cooked. Lifting the fish out can sometimes be a little tricky, but with care you can manage it. I use my hands and I strongly advise you to do the same. It’s much easier to spread your fingers under the fish than a rigid spatula. You’ll find the skin peels off easily and you can dress the fish with cucumber or mayonnaise or whatever takes your fancy. So simple. Such a stunning result. And don’t forget to make your own mayonnaise which, as everyone knows, is a very tricky thing to do. Don’t believe a word of it. Forget the stories you may have heard and follow me (as well as Keith Floyd who taught me this trick). Put two eggs in the goblet of a blender. Add a pinch of salt and a dessertspoon of vinegar. Switch on. With the motor running, drizzle the oil of your choice (I use grape-seed oil) into the top of the blender until you achieve the required result. You’ll use about half a pint of oil. If the mixture is too thick, simply add a little hot water and whisk again. Tip: Avoid olive oil! Yes I know what it says in the recipe books and if you like mayonnaise with a bitter flavor, ignore me. But I promise you your guests will not be asking for seconds if you do :0) Copyright Tingira Publishing 2004 All Rights Reserved Michael Sheridan is an acknowledged authority and published writer on cooking matters. The First-Time Vegetable Gardener — Some Pathways to Success

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

By Fred Davis Did I hear you correctly? You’re just “starting out” in the rewarding (and often exhausting) hobby of gardening? Think you’d like to grow your own vegetables, instead of limiting your choices to that natural-looking, neatly-arranged assortment of mostly foreign grown produce in the supermarket? Are you concerned that, in all likelihood, most supermarket vegetable offerings may contain substances (additives, pesticides, and other chemicals used in their production) over which you have absolutely no control, and that you’d prefer not to serve to your family? Then you’re among a growing number of consumers with a yearning to take control over the quality and content of at least some of the food consumed, and have made a firm decision to grow their own. Below are some helpful tips for the health-conscious neophyte veggie gardener. . .tips not cast in stone, but ones that will improve your chances of success and satisfaction. First, your new garden’s location. Most vegetables grow and mature best in full, uninterrupted sunlight. You’ve probably noticed that the big, profitable market-growers don’t have too many trees in and around their production fields. Eight to ten mid-summer hours is preferable, but that may be a bit difficult for many home-gardeners. Try for an absolute minimum of six full hours of direct sunshine during the brightest part of the day. Save the shady spot in your yard for the hammock. For the beginning vegetable grower, 650 to 1,000 square feet of space is manageable. Be careful not to bite off more than you can comfortably chew! If you find you need more space, you can always expand the following year. If your new garden space is currently lawn or weeds, here’s a word or two of caution: tilled into the soil, crabgrass, Bermuda grass, dandelions, and many other aggressive weed species will re-grow from the tiniest fragment and quickly return to haunt any gardener. Take the time to remove all weeds — leaf, stem and root — before starting the garden. Most experts correctly recommend that you “peel” off the top two or three inches of turf before you begin preparing the soil to receive valuable seeds or transplants. And you should know that rototilling a patch of lawn is probably the most common and tragic mistake made by overly-enthusiastic novice gardeners. Soil preparation is next. Don’t begin until the ground is drained well enough that a handful of soil squeezed into a lump breaks apart when dropped from about chin-high. Resist the temptation to disturb soil that’s gooey and sticks together. I’ve always preferred to prepare a new garden soil with a spade. . .and I like to drive that spade completely to the “hilt” and turn my soil upside-down — literally. That’s ten to twelve inches deep. Homeowner-size rototillers rarely have the ability to cultivate any deeper than four to six inches. Not enough! Having said that, Ive never been a fan or proponent of double-digging to the oft-proclaimed depth of 16 to 24 inches. Realistically, root systems of the overwhelming majority of common vegetables perform admirably in improved soils cultivated to a depth of a foot or so. Exhausting — and frequently discouraging — double-digging is not for me! Soil that’s been lawn or field weeds, and hasn’t been cultivated for several years, is probably dirt-poor, so to speak. As you turn your new food-growing plot upside-down, mix in organic material such as compost or sterilized cow or horse manure to make it rich, deep and loamy. Three or four inches worked in deeply would be great! Peat moss can be used to break up heavy clay soils but should not be relied upon to add nutrition or beneficial biology to your soil. Peat moss is quite literally nutritionally and biologically dead and adds nothing of any lasting benefit to the soil. Now’s the time for a soil test. A mailer and complete instructions are available at your local Cooperative Extension Service office. Cost for a test is in the range of about $12. . .good insurance for improving your chances of success right from the start! While at the Extension, ask about their selection of very helpful publications to help you get off on the right foot. Most are free. Select your seeds, sets, transplants, and roots carefully and, based on your preferences, availability and quality. At nurseries or garden centers, never settle for tall, spindly vegetable transplants that are root bound, or appear to have been neglected in their tiny containers, or ones that have already begun to bloom or have set fruit. Those are “dead-end” — and the furthest thing from a bargain. Make your purchases early enough in the season to ensure strong, stocky plants that have a solid, healthy appearance and color. Reject any transplants that have excessively curled leaves, and those showing signs of nutritional deficiency (bronzing or yellowing of lower leaves, for example). And never accept young veggie plants from displays infested with aphids or small, winged, “gnats” or moths. Most nurseries and garden centers will carry one or more lines of acceptable quality packaged seeds. Personally, I get my seeds from well-known and reliable local sources when possible, and I always stay away from the bargain racks at markets and those high-volume, high-traffic big-box stores. I like my seed fresh, and I take comfort in the assurance of optimal, carefully controlled storage conditions. Johnnys Selected Seeds of Winslow, Maine (http://www.johnnyseeds.com) is, in my opinion, a good place to start. Fertilizer is, of course, an important consideration. I prefer to avoid use of bagged, granular, non-natural mixtures for use in soil intended for producing my food. Yes, you can use the recommended 10-10-10 (a “balanced” commercial plant food), but for me, the jury is still out on the long-term health consequences of non-natural fertilizers and plant food. In my mind, a safer choice would be an organic mixture of naturally-occurring plant nutritional elements available at most large farm-’n-gardens and garden centers. Always follow directions printed on the package and the recommendations included in the results of your soil test. You’ll have a better grasp of just how much fertilizer and lime to apply once you have those results in-hand. Get the recommended fertilizer and any other suggested amendments thoroughly tilled-in a few days before you actually sow your seeds or plunk in your transplants. There is actually more to achieving real success in the home vegetable patch. But now you have a basis from which to begin. You might like to read an 8-part series on vegetable gardening beginning at http://www.HillGardens.com/veggie-1.htm. So, as soon as spring arrives, off you go! Enjoy your new garden — and keep a stiff upper lip, a smile on your face and a song in your heart! One final thought: don’t be afraid to ask questions. A successful neighborhood gardener is a tremendous resource. So also is the local library. And your state’s Cooperative Extension Service can put you in touch with a Master Gardener or two for some first-rate and accurate local gardening assistance. While you’re at it, why not consider becoming a Master Gardener yourself? The Extension offers courses; the price is right; times are convenient; instruction is by top-notch professionals; and then you’ll be the expert — and successful! Hey!…what’s wrong with that? Herbert W Armstrong and Worldwide Church of God Mentioned in Israeli Newspaper

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

By David Ben-Ariel You could say I have a God-given love for the Jews and the nation of Israel (Isaiah 62:6-7). That sacred bond has been strengthened over the years by the fact that I’ve been blessed to have lived all over Israel, getting to know its land and people quite well. Apart from 5 months as a kibbutz volunteer at Ramat Yohanan near Haifa, I’ve also served as a kibbutz volunteer at Sdot Yam on the Mediterranean, next to Caesarea, the site of my first ulpan (intensive Hebrew course), and where Israel’s heroine, Hannah Senesh, was from; Regavim, near Zichron Yaakov, where I continued my Hebrew lessons amid its rolling green hills; Reshafim, near Bet She’an, with Mt. Gilboa practically in our backyard, and Jordan’s mountains in lovely view out front; Adamit, on Lebanon’s border, high up on a mountain, from where on clear days you can see all the way to Haifa’s Mt. Carmel; Shoval, a rose in the Negev desert, just north of Be’er Sheva; Dan, way up in the northernmost part of Israel, in between Syria and Lebanon, next to the majestic snow-covered Mt. Hermon, where I was living when “Operation Desert Storm” blew in; and Ha’On, with its campground and ostrich farm on the eastern shores of the Sea of Galilee, across from Tiberias; and last but not least, my beloved Jerusalem, next to my favorite spot on earth: the Temple Mount. It was during my sojourn at Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan, while looking for the home of the widow Simcha Gombo, a Worldwide Church of God member and mother of Michal (who was deaf) - both of whom I had briefly met during the 1980 Church of God celebration of the biblical Festival of Tabernacles in Jerusalem - that I met Ilan Itzhayek on the street and asked directions, as related in Israel Work History (Worldwide Church of God). Ilan Itzhayek wrote the following full page article in Hebrew that appeared in Hed HaKiryot, a newspaper in Northern Israel, just West of the Sea of Galilee, November 19, 1982. Please note that David Hoover is the name I was born with before I legally changed it to David Ben-Ariel, and forgive the imperfect translation of the Hebrew into English in this attempt to preserve a part of the Church of God history in the Promised Land (and honor Ilan Itzhayek for helping to make it). The Drug Addict Who Discovered God and the Kibbutz by Ilan Itzhayek His name is David Allen Hoover - he’s 22 years old and was born in Toledo, Ohio, USA. David, and other members of the Church he belongs to arrived in Israel last month as visitors in Jerusalem, but David stayed behind as a volunteer at Kibbutz Ramat Yohanan. He doesn’t mind any of the work they give him to do - whether it’s in the fields, in the factory or in the chicken incubators - he has ideals. David belongs to a very special Church called the Worldwide Church of God - they call themselves the true Christians and consider the conventional Christians pagan. They believe in the Torah of Moses and observe Sabbath, as well as all the annual holy days mentioned in the Torah. They believe Jesus Christ is the Messenger of God. The Church has 100,000 brethren all over the world. A common belief they have is that they have been chosen by God to join the community of believers. Their leader is Herbert Armstrong, 91, whom they admire and consider that he’s come in the spirit of Elijah. David talks quite excitedly about his Church. He’s very patient and ready to explain his convictions to you again if you haven’t understood them. His answers are filled with verses from the Bible and the New Testament - verses that he knows by heart. He calls himself “chosen” because in his Church there isn’t those “religious and not religious” - there’s only the chosen. If you don’t agree the Church doesn’t want you - which means that God hasn’t called you. Scar in the Heart David hasn’t always been in the Church. He was raised on a farm in Ohio that belongs to his father’s family. His parents were divorced when he was 11 years old. A year later his alcoholic father died at the early age of 36. “All I remember about my father,” David says with a sort of bitter smile, “is that he was drunk and always messing up the house and arguing with my mom. He was always arguing with her. I was really young then so I really didn’t even get to know him. I almost can’t remember how he looks.” It was a drastic change - his parents divorced, the move from the farm to the city, a new school and then his father’s death that deeply affected him. Soon, with all of his being, David began to search for a way to help him with his hurt. That’s when someone mentioned to him how you feel “high” when you do drugs. So he began to really look for drugs. He tried to find out who used them and where they hung out. Shortly after trying pills, pot and hash, he began to buy them regularly. “When I was 15 years old I stopped taking them by the mouth and started snorting them” - quickly adding ‘ “it’s far more potent that way and it affects you more quickly…money to buy drugs with wasn’t a problem for me. It wasn’t hard to get. The man my mom had remarried wasn’t rich, but he definitely wasn’t poor. The allowances I got I used to buy drugs with instead of clothes or other things. My sister and I kept it secret that we were getting high and so our parents kept giving us good allowances.” It seems like David will never forget a Jethro Tull rock concert that he attended. “I had snorted some drugs, smoked a lot of pot and hash and was drinking beer until I was really high.” He remembers, “I felt really strange. All I remember is being sat down by some friends and the chair began to fall backwards…3 days later I woke up in the intensive care unit of the hospital with a heart monitor attached to me. I was in serious condition and it had been getting worse but the doctors worked hard to save me.” “Later there was a special agreement between me and my parents,” David grins. “I was promised that if I quit taking drugs they’d allow me to let my hair grow long. I promised and I didn’t keep it. My hair grew down to my waist.” Wanderings and its Moral A different stage began in David’s life: wandering through different churches. He was in and out of many churches during his search for the true morals and values. He considered the members of traditional Christianity as hypocrites. Those churches had failed to fulfill him. After failing to find what he was searching for, David came in contact with Hinduism - the Hare Krishnas. He was attracted by its exotic appeal, the incense and vegetarian members of that cult. During a special Krishna festival in Philadelphia, he met a famous leader in their movement who wanted him to become his personal aide and travel all over. David decided not to join because he didn’t want to be separated from his family. “I believed in Hare Krishna,” David says assured, “I loved the religion because it was physically and spiritually attractive and I was devoted to it. I engaged in their ceremonies, singing and dancing, chanting their mantras and going into a group trance. But even though I knew their religion didn’t accept drugs, I still used them, though they were unaware of it. I was around 17 when I began to shoot up drugs.” After awhile David began to seriously question his involvement with the Krishnas. He feared he had been wrong, had been misled in going to the guru. His amount and use of drugs began to dramatically increase, going to the bars every night of the week, getting high and drunk, began to take its toll on his body. By then it seems he had lost any spiritual strength he had. “God Help Me” “I really began to think about God,” he says. “Suddenly I began to think about him seriously and wondered if I had been deceived or enlightened in Krishna. I begged God to lead me into all the truth. I had prayed about it many times and then one of the greatest miracles in my life happened” - he explains while getting down on his knees to show how he had been praying. “All I remember is that I was purposely praying to the God of the Bible and really hoped that somehow He would answer my prayer. Then it was like a hot brand was put upon my forehead. Two words were forcibly impressed upon my mind: “FORSAKE HINDUISM!” Then I actually wondered whether it was my subconscious that gave me those words. I turned to my Bible that was beside me and, unintentionally, opened it up to Psalms 115:4-8 - David’s holding his Bible and reading it out loud: “Their idols are silver and gold; the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; They have ears, but they hear not; noses have they, but they smell not; They have hands, but they handle not; feet have they, but they walk not; neither speak they through their throat. They that make them are like them; so is every one that trusts in them.” “After that I didn’t need any further proof to know that it had truly been from God. That same day I burned all my Hindu books, beads, posters…”. “Dirty needles” The drugs caused David’s condition to continually deteriorate. Everyone told him that he was destroying himself. He knew himself that he was going to die, but he wasn’t able to help himself. “All that horrible time” - David says with a shaky voice - “I really wanted to be free. I didn’t want to be addicted to drugs. But I also felt that there wasn’t anything in this world worth living for. I didn’t have any power but I still tried to get off drugs. I ended up throwing away my needles, hoping to stop, but later I’d turn around and go back and take them out and use them.” Even though his needles had been in the garbage, dirty and broken, he said he still used them up to a dozen times, even though you’re only supposed to use them once! “I was taking the needles in my frustration and would bash them against the wall so that I couldn’t use them, but later I’d attempt to until it hurt me and I was bleeding. That’s when I realized that I was addicted.” David says, thinking out loud: “All I knew was that only GOD could help me, not man!” David experienced “almost sure death” another time, besides the rock concert, when he was 18, and was in his bedroom mainlining some drugs. His mother was home at the time but was unaware of what was happening to her son. “Suddenly everything seemed strange to me” - David says trying to remember - “the music started sounding really weird…Later I woke up in the hospital and a doctor informed me that I had damaged my liver and that it was a miracle that I still had a brain and could think clearly.” Goodbye and Good Riddance “Those were my times of wandering in the wilderness. God delivered me and took me out of Egypt into His light” - David says reflecting on his past. “The inner struggle between good and evil wearied me after awhile. I had been asking God what I was supposed to do. I asked for power because I didn’t have any strength and none of the churches I encountered had the power necessary to deliver me from drugs. At the time I opened up my Bible unintentionally to Isaiah 45. The first verse that caught my eye was verse 2: “I will go before thee and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron…”. That verse succeeded to do for David what he, of himself, had been unable to do for years. “No more drugs!” David said and that is how he finally managed to be free from drugs. “Now I felt ready to begin to listen to God. Sometimes you have to first live in darkness before you can appreciate the light. I knew I wanted to live God’s ways of life so I said good-riddance to drugs and to my old friends and bad influences - to all of that I said goodbye and good riddance!” “Drugs are a Lie” Shortly afterwards, David discovered the Worldwide Church of God through their Plain Truth magazine. The ideas in it seemed so logical to him and not like all the others he had known. Soon David was one of its excited believers. After a whole year of observing Sabbath and all the holy days of Israel, he was baptized as a brother into the Church. One of the Worldwide Church of God beliefs is that there will be a politico-military mess that will take place by next year. In their opinion, Germany, and maybe even Italy, will attempt to conquer the world. That attempt will ignite a world war that will take two thirds of the world’s population, but that afterwards there will begin a true peace for planet Earth. The members of the Worldwide Church of God will be among those that survive and they believe that eventually their beliefs will be accepted by all the Earth. The doctrines of the Church are all biblically based. Besides the above-mentioned prophecy there is another one that states the world leaders will sit in Jerusalem and that Israel will become a “Light to all nations.” The whole world will have one government. David is writing a book, from his biblical research, about the two prophets who will prepare the way for the days to come. David is also contemplating about writing an autobiography. He already knows what he would call it - Wanderings! He’s convinced that he has a lot of experience to give to others, and he’s very interested in warning those who might consider abusing drugs. “Drugs are a lie” - he says - “and it would be a lot better if people would learn form the experience of others. Today I’m alive, very alive - and I feel I have a lot to live for!” David Ben-Ariel is a Christian-Zionist writer and author of Beyond Babylon: Europe’s Rise and Fall.
